I had a friend that recently died. She was a hardcore Republican, BTW. She was in her 30s with 3 major health problems, 2 of which weren't caught early enough because she lacked healthcare growing up (the damage done was not reversible). She was not happy where she was economically. What values would you say that she lacked that led her to not be economically successful?
We all get why you and others like making excuses or doing whataboutism, because mobility is quite obviously a product of the types of policies you oppose. I hate to break it to you, but there isnt a secret sauce in America. We have a modicum of social democracy here, which makes opportunity possible and easily explains all the anecdotes and observations some have made about black doctors or whatever. We arent at the bottom of the list by any means. Its just that many other countries have more mobility than America. Its ok to admit that we could do much better here.

Not really. There is a difference between finding something and setting out to find something. You have no evidence that it was the latter in the case of those researchers. Their research is done at a global level. To pretend that their focus is on the US is likely not a supportable hypothesis. The problem is this discussion is being kept very vague on your side here. You are referring to alternative explanations like age, history, size, and "population makeup" but not really offering why any of those in particular are variables that mess with causation in this particular context.
Yep, some people move up and some don't. But you claimed that "Only someone’s values prevent them from opportunity and mobility." When you say "only," that means that there are literally no other explanations. So what value would you say that she didn't have because of her poor health from childhood resulting from a lack of healthcare access? Or do you think she could have just willed her illnesses away with the power of positive thinking?
Doubtful. I love successful people and their stories are inspirational. I used to be a guidance counselor and enjoyed listening to parents and students find their path to success. You have a lot of frustration built up and have convinced yourself that the USA is a bad place. Sleep on it.
I think you have convinced yourself America is a great place, and cant handle it when people point out the things that aren't great about it. Must be very frustrating, which is why you respond with gifs and emojis, and rarely engage in substantive discourse, because deep down you know the truth that you are fooling yourself and its tough to reconcile. See, I can play armchair psychologist too.
How many studies have been done on this topic? It appears to be a lot of social science involved in collecting data. The world is changing quickly and people/culture is a complicated part of what we’re discussing. Don’t be so dismissive and show me multiple recent studies that I’m wrong. America, for all of its diversity and freedom, continues to provide great opportunity and mobility. People still work their asses off to move to America. It’s not because we’re a racist nation designed to stymie minorities from finding success.
I agree. We should have everybody growing up under the exact same conditions. Same exact access to food, water, healthcare, etc, regardless of input. To ensure such equality, let’s abolish private property. We’ll have someone who knows best allocate resources in a way that is most equitable. Where have we seen this before?
We agree! I have convinced myself that America is a great place! Headed to a birthday party this evening where my Hispanic, white and black friends will be in attendance. I’ll forget your blathering and break bread and have a drink with real America. We all look different but we all have well adjusted children because we all have similar family values. I am convinced because it’s true, all Americans are free if they wish to be. Some people are wired differently….I can’t your change mind, you seem to enjoy finding problems with everything. Just shooting from the hip, but I imagine that teacher retention is a bigger issue in at-risk communities than it is in affluent settings.
Another poster who misunderstands what I mean. Fairness and everyone being made equal are two different things. Put a little thought into your next post rather than knee-jerking, if that’s at all possible.
