Seemed odd to me too 74. Listened to Yanks GM Cashman on postgame show last night and he said they felt like Montgomery didn’t figure in their plans for playoffs as a 5th starter while they believe Bader can play a significant role from a defensive standpoint and help with his bat when he comes off the Injured list. Seems to make sense.
Bader, though I pull for him, is a .250 hitter. Not a lot of HRs. Speed for some base stealing and an excellent defensive CFer. Yankee Stadium calls for a grounding covering CFer. So the NY Yanks with all their bats dont need a hitter. They traded for Montes which gives them the opportunity to get better on the mound and shore up CF. HB may bat 8th or 9th. The Cards on the other hand are over loaded with OFers all who are 250-280 hitters. So HB was simply just another one of their guys that they knew his upside. They were desperate for a pitcher with one of their starters down and having gone Johnny Wholestaff for a couple of games. A regular starter is the key for them to make playoffs and beyond.
350— That clears up the why trade here question marks somewhat along with 77 saying that Bader has ties in NY as well. Always wish our guys the best of luck.
Nobody is going to confuse HB with Mantle, Mays, Jr, DiMaggio, Ty Cobb or Tris Speaker but he is a solid major league center fielder.
Kinda like Os getting Phillips from Sun Devil rays... only thing I got is,.. a late inning def replacement. Judge , Carpenter, Binnentindi, Hicks, Stanton..not sure what else hes going to do..lol One of rthose DHs obviously.
Shelby, those are some good points that you make. I believe Cashman emphasized defense and speed that Bader would add. The Yankees need a true CF and have very little speed on the bases. Montgomery should give St Louis a steady but not a dominant pitcher. I’ve been frustrated with him of late as he would go 0-2 on a hitter and then not be able to put him away. Also, he gets some of the worst run support when he pitches which is strange based on how well the Yanks have scored overall.
Good news is is that the Yankees should teach Harrison a thing or two about proper personal grooming . Now we need Puk and India to get traded there.
Hicks has been in CF this week, Judge to Rf,, Bader yet to play... Maybe needs to,,the one time I need/want them to win and they lose series to Ms at StL this weekend,, guessing he may get a start,,just b/c lol
As a Cardinals fan, this trade makes sense. We're loaded in the OF, have a good nucleus of young talent coming up, and Harrison has been on the IL for a while now, with rumors that he may not be back this season. We need pitching depth more than anything, so the trade for Montgomery is completely understandable. As a Gator, though, it sucks. Really like him and wish him well, even in NY.
