Sheriff accused of pressuring candidates to drop races

TITUSVILLE, Fla. (AP) — A third candidate for public office has come to forward to say a sheriff on Florida’s Space Coast offered help in getting a job in exchange for leaving a race and backing his favored candidate.

Kimberly Musselman, an assistant state attorney in Brevard County, told Florida Today she was asked by Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey to bow out of her race for county judge and endorse a candidate backed by him. In exchange, the sheriff said he could use his influence to help her become the district’s top prosecutor, she said.

After she refused, Ivey urged some of her biggest donors to drop their support, Musselman told Florida Today.

“My donors dried up real quick,” Musselman said.

This is deplorable but not surprising coming from Florida, home of slimy politicians and the people that love them

That's politics and if anyone believes this doesn't happen in elections across the nation they are being naive. Promises are made to candidates, donors and supporters alike.

Doesn’t seem illegal or unethical. Just regular dirty politics.

Yes, but the Sheriff holds the highest constitutional office in the county and should enforce the law without bias or favor. Not sure it isn’t unethical. This is not a good look for someone in that office in my view.

Who says he isn't enforcing the laws on the books equally. The article certainly doesn't imply that. The article is political he's not threatening to lock people up is he?

LOL, if you were doing that, why would you need a handpicked judge or a top prosecutor who owes you their job? Why do you give people engaging in blatant corruption the benefit of the doubt? You think you do this stuff so you cant get your screw up kid or golfing buddy out of a DUI or something? Make life difficult for people who might look into your corruption or influence?

The law and politics are not one and the same which you seem to imply. The sheriff can enforce the law without bias or favor and still have political views in who he will or will not support.

You have evidence this sheriff is doing that? Until such evidence is brought to light the sheriff's integrity is intact. I give everyone the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise. Have we become a people so jaded that no one is worthy including ourselves?

Huh? The evidence is that he is cultivating a network of influence and patronage , do you not think he intends to use that to his benefit? He already used it to strongarm donors of the person who didnt take his offer to drop their support for her. This seem like a person who is on the level or above encouraging favoritism when it comes to justice? Just a ridiculously naive stance on your part, sorry.

Huh - the evidence is the sheriff is trying to get those elected he wants in office. That is nothing unusual in politics. Is there political gain in it for the sheriff? Possibly - but then I again I don't know of anyone who isn't looking for something when politics are involved. Be it an appointment or a possible act of legislation to further one's beliefs.

Most people "get those elected they want in office" by you know, voting, donating money or knocking doors for their favored candidates. They don't use their office to handpick candidates, manipulate the field to their liking or strongarm donors into abandoning candidates that don't want to be part of their patronage network.
