Absolutely. Even when I was sure he would lose in 2016, there was the worry that he gave voice and encouragement to all the racist hate out there. We obviously hadn't eliminated it, but we'd stuffed it back in the bottle a bit because people were embarrassed to say it out loud.
But he empowered them to step out loud and large.

 

I told people he couldn't win because the country was only like 8% racist. Man, was I way off.

That 8% is pretty accurate. It all depends on how one defines racism.

If we define it by its true meaning, that one thinks his race is superior to another and the other is inferior to his, then there are very few people that truly believe that school of thought.
If we define it as anyone who told or laughed at an offensively charged joke, then that figure is easily 99.99% of us. (and basically meaningless)

He was sued (multiple times) for racial discrimination in his housing, including marking each minority application with a C, settling each time, he was quoted by one of his casino executives of saying a bunch of really racist things like how black people are lazy and he doesn't want them handling his money, which he admitted he "probably did," oh, and he does things like tell people born in the US that aren't white to go back to their countries while not doing it to white people born in America.
