I don’t feel any way about this, if they decided to keep the coach I wouldn’t care and if he decided to resign I wouldn’t care. I do find it amusing that whenever someone in a position of authority gets canned for using that term, folks get up and arms and start telling black people what they should and shouldn’t say. Being told you can’t do/say something drives some folks crazy lol

Cracker is quite neutral. Especially to Floridians. Not even in the same ballpark.
For one it was coined by other white people.

Don't equate can/can't with should/shouldn't. No one is saying anyone can't say what they want. There is a discussion that there are certain words one shouldn't say. Big difference!

I guess the important question is does it further the cause and advancement of blacks? By definition it is going to cause whites to treat blacks differently than whites. You need to be very careful of what you say, and it is easier not to open up and say anything. According to one nfl player they lost a coach that was very instrumental in his life and development. All because he clumsily repeated a forbidden word otherwise heard in popular culture every day.

To be clear, I don’t care one way or another.

Maybe a different tact here. There are (arguably) three words in the English language that can be denoted by simply a letter and all three are considered unbelievably vulgar and insulting in any company. The "F-word", the "C-word" and the "N-word".

Can you please explain to me why it's considered acceptable within the Black community? What is the difference in the meaning of the word and the connotations associated with its use?

You're only treating Black people differently than white people, as a white person, if you're using the n-word with your white friends. Otherwise, what are you worried about?

It's quite easy for me to open up to Black people, but I also am not worried about accidentally using a racial slur.

Didn't you have that conversation? I'd say it's about reclaiming the word meant to hurt them and using it amongst each other to mean brother or friend.

Telling other groups what they should/shouldn’t say is still highly amusing.

I am ashamed to admit that it isn’t unusual for someone to give me the finger driving. I am not a jerk but I drive like someone who learned to drive in NYC. Not everyone is appreciative of that art.

One day in Orlando a city bus driver stopped right next to me, opened her bus doors, and called me a “cracker” loudly. I have no idea what my infraction was but I’m sure it was deserved.

That's the difference. I don't see this as talking to "another group". I see this as talking to "fellow human beings."

Why not? Serious question. I'm not trying to be argumentative. I'm trying to engage in an open and honest discussion about an obviously sensitive issue.

Life among 21st century two-leggers is just plain stupid. Don't know if it always was, but it definitely is now.

I got the third-hand story now from my brother who got it from a former player that had Gundy as his position coach.

There were having a very short position group meeting and Gundy told them to take notes. A player was not paying attention and later in the meeting Gundy asked him a question about what he should do on a particular play/situation. The player didn't know and Gundy looked at his iPad to see what he had written down. Apparently, it was lyrics to a song that used the N-word twice. He read what he had written on the iPad out loud. He immediately apologized to the players after reading it. It was brought to the attention of the head coach and there is a no exception rule for using the word. It was either resign or get the ax. The current players supported Gundy and former players and alum support Gundy, according to what I was told.

Take that for what it is worth.

One of my sons and his friend were calling each other the n word. I told my son to stop. He said that the word he was using ended in gah not ger. I said well ask your friends grandfather if that was a distinction that he understood. His grandfather who had lost a leg in Korea apparently tanned his grandsons hide and Cole, my son, had to mow his yard for a month before they were allowed to hang out again.

and Cole never said that word ever again. I liked the way grandpa handled it.

I’m just interested in how many players we can get to transfer here now that Oklahoma is apparently the new home of racism.

I agree with this completely. However, there is also a HUGE difference between a coach reading the words from the player’s iPad screen, and a coach saying the words from his thoughts. Gundy was not “saying” the word; he read it from the player’s iPad screen on the context it appeared on the screen (likely music lyrics).

I was more responding to the other poster’s comments as opposed to taking sides over Gundy’s firing. Since I don’t know the guy, I’m going to take the word of current and former players that vouch for his character. In a Perfect world, we could clear up misconceptions and move on. Unfortunately, these days people who have no stake in the situation are the ones that most fervently call for blood.
