So says the legislature. Wonder how the people would vote. https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2022/08/06/indiana-abortion-ban-roe-holcomb/ The Republican-dominated state Senate approved the legislation 28-19 on Friday in a vote that came just hours after it passed Indiana’s lower chamber. The bill, which will go into effect Sept. 15, allows abortion only in cases of rape, incest, lethal fetal abnormality or when the procedure is necessary to prevent severe health risks or death. The vote followed days of testimony from citizens and a debate that grew heated at times. “Sir, I am not a murderer,” state Rep. Renee Pack (D) said in the chamber after state Rep. John Jacob (R), a staunch abortion opponent who wanted exceptions for rape removed, described the procedure as murder. In a statement, antiabortion group Indiana Right to Life opposed the exceptions and said the new law did not go far enough in cutting abortion access.
Here comes the counter strike. This is what will finally start to give the moderates who go along with the zealots pause. Once one or two big companies give cover to everyone else, this is where the fracture on the Republican side will start.
There are exceptions that 90% or greater of Americans agree with. So why refer it to it as a “Near Total Ban on Abortion” except for propaganda purposes?
Because other than the exceptions, which are rare, abortion is totally outlawed. I don’t think you can even take a damn abortion pill.
Not propaganda. Except in those cases, abortion will be outlawed in Indiana beginning in September. Near total is correct.
Whenever people discuss a total ban on abortion, the usual rejoinders are “What about rape?” “What about incest” “What about life of the mother?” “What about severe birth defects?” This law seems to address most of that, unless those conditions were all just red herrings. If there are other necessary exceptions, then negotiate them. I also don’t see anything in the law that prevents anyone going to another state. There just isn’t anything to get worked up about here.
Not me, and I doubt I’m much of an outlier. I promise I’ll never have an abortion. But I also know that once I don’t control my person, being a person is crazy overrated.
Speaking of propaganda…. nice reverse spin mojo. Just because 90 % insist on those exceptions (meaning 10% are hardcore nutjobs) doesn’t mean 90% of Americans are in favor of the rest of the components of a “near total abortion ban” with only few exceptions. The majority of Americans sure as hell don’t want the pill outlawed, a solid majority don’t even want abortion outlawed at all.
Not quite, most Americans support an unrestricted right to abortion early in pregnancy. There is also a problem with the phrasing of the exception "when the pregnant person’s life is at risk" since it's so vague that doctors would have to wait until the pregnant woman is literally at death's door before performing an abortion to avoid the risk of prosecution from an overly zealous prosecutor.
Yes, and even with those few exceptions still makes it a “near total abortion ban”, it is not dishonest for it to be described in that way. It doesn’t even allow the 6 weeks buffer of other looney tunes states passing fetal heartbeat laws and such, it is from conception. I actually do find it somewhat bizarre they allow the full 20 weeks under the “exceptions” considering they otherwise basically went all the way to full control of women’s bodies.
What spin, when 60+% of Americans support a woman’s right to unilateral choice in the first trimester. Majority Of Americans Support Abortion, Poll Finds — But Not Later In The Pregnancy And kudos to Eli Lilly.
Interestingly Indiana legislature is mostly older (avg age 58) men (74%). Women in State Legislatures for 2021
But no exception for poverty, quality of life or inability to love and raise a child - aren't these also moral issues? A woman or child, who gets pregnant despite using BC, will know the answers to those questions, along with their families, better than anyone else.
