One wonders if in some low level of some department of the federal government there is a hidden corner populated with men and women of integrity. I'm sure there is but the stank is dense, pervasive, and breathtaking lately.

seems that even the watchdog group is being led by a MAGA contingent as they actively tried to hinder the recovery of the missing texts. why these agencies haven't purged the partisan hacks that Trump appointed is beyond my understanding. Seems like Mr Kait needs to be fired and brought up on charges

House panels: DHS officials interfered in effort to get lost Secret Service texts (msn.com)

Taken together, the new revelations appear to show that the chief watchdog for the Secret Service and DHS took deliberate steps to stop the retrieval of texts it knew were missing, and then sought to hide the fact that it had decided not to pursue that evidence.

The inspector general’s office had initially sought to retrieve the lost texts from across the DHS – spanning both the Secret Service as well as former DHS Secretary Chad Wolf and his deputy Ken Cuccinelli – as part of its internal review into January 6.

But six weeks after the inspector general’s office first requested Secret Service communications from the time of the Capitol attack, that effort was shut down by Thomas Kait, the deputy inspector general for inspections and evaluations, the House committees said.

“Use this email as a reference to our conversation where I said we no longer request phone records and text messages from the USSS relating to the events on January 6th,” Kait wrote in a July 2021 email to senior DHS liaison official Jim Crumpacker that was obtained by Congress.

The House committees also disclosed they had learned that Kait and other senior officials manipulated a memo, authored on 4 February 2022, that originally criticized DHS for refusing to cooperate with its investigation and emphasized the need to review certain texts.

Heads should roll and if applicable, charges filed. Incompetent or corrupt as hell. Neither are acceptable.

This inspector general needs to be hauled in for questioning, if not have his devices subpoenaed. Instead of doing his job, he seemingly gave the green light to destroy evidence. That email is pretty damning, even though it seems like the intent was to provide “legal cover” by explicitly stating those records were no longer being sought. He definitely needs to explain that decision in more detail under oath.

We're at a point where nothing that comes out about that administration should surprise anyone anymore.

Law and Order doesn’t apply to those who are entitled to power, and the means will always justify the ends to his supporters who would have a big problem with this if it weren’t one of their own..

this supports why I found the DOD OIG report on 1-6 self serving. This isn’t random. The records on those phones belonged to the federal government. And, the change in administration does not support wiping public phones.

I agree. All texts/emails on government phones MUST be preserved in the National Archives. There must be a statutory provision criminalizing the failure to do so. What is a democracy if there’s not rigorous transparency?

One of Trump’s few sustained initiatives was a relentless war on oversight.

Depressingly ironic, this was him at his most competent, taking proactive action to address repercussions of undiscovered and future criminality. If only they could have applied this level of analysis and coordination to lawful matters.

+ Trump Secret Service, Trump DHS and Trump DOD. And, previously, Trump University.

Yet, Trump cult members will continue to defend this corrupt mob boss.

Loyalty to him is his only frame of focus and reference. It is personal, I can see how he would prioritize it

It's comical to me that so many of the responses are the same things that were being bandied about over the last 10 years or so from the other side.
None of it is good from either side, the whole deal is a swamp, but just comical the outrage today that was absent in the past. It is definitely a team sport!!!
