Jersey City councilwoman who slammed cyclist refuses to resign (nydailynews.com)

A Jersey City councilwoman who drove through a cyclist and then continued without stopping has refused to resign.

Amy DeGise “plans to complete her full term and continue in public service,” her spokesman told Patch on Friday.

DeGise didn’t report the incident to police until six hours later, NJ.com reported. Black appeared to be pedaling through a red light when DeGise hit him, but she still received a summons for leaving the scene of an accident.

Since the footage became public earlier this week, multiple groups have called for DeGise’s resignation and hundreds have signed a petition. In a GoFundMe page, Black said he’s been unable to work since the crash.

No comment on it FL2? What’s the news’s here?

Video is here since it wasn’t in the link of OP. 1:00 mark is the accident. Bicyclist ran red light and was clipped by car who proceeded on green.

The legally driving city councilwoman has not responded. My guess is she’ll say she was scared to stop?

    It doesn’t imbed well

Local politicians doing what they do. Bicyclist is dumb for running the red but who hits someone like that and keeps driving?

She also doesn't think she needs to register her vehicle apparently. She had a vehicle towed for lack of registration and illegal parking where she of course drops the "I'm a city council person" line. Our country is rotting from the core because these are our leaders....

Jersey 'hit-run' pol Amy DeGise tried to dodge prior car tow

The intersection looks like one of those you see in a 3rd world country. Sort a free for all.

No way she didnt know. That is jail time imo.

She is engaged to a first responder. (Firefighter)

    Dinner should be interesting.

Hey honey what did you do today?
I responded to a hit and run where a guy on a bike got smashed by some crazy person who left the scene.
    How about you?
Oh... um... nothing. Pass the potatoes.

Dumb ass road biker “sharing the road” … not just running the red light but illegally passing the stopped cars on the left…. But she shouldn’t have left and should pay the price.

Now we know exactly what she thinks of the people she represents (fodder). I wonder what was so important that she felt the her need was worth more than stopping to tend to the person she hit.

“Amy recognizes the calls that have been made for additional information and transparency,” her spokesman told Patch. “She would very much like to address this situation more comprehensively, but there is a legal process that must play out first and she will not be making any additional public comment at this time.”

Not as much of a partisan story here as the OP had hoped for, but the driver should face the consequences for hit and run regardless of who caused the accident. And as a member of the of the Jersey house, I’m certainly ok to hold her to a higher standard as she represents the public trust

Ironically my wife and I happened by a cyclist hit by a car at the Roswell Road/285 interchange yesterday, which is a complete mess due to construction. Very unsafe for bikes.

Police were already there and the cyclist seemed okay just very wobbly, but my first thought was “why wouldn’t that cyclist just walk her bike past the exit ramp and across the overpass” which is littered with cones, drivers who don’t understand it, etc. A little common sense would have saved her her injuries and a whole bunch of time.

Eh, nothing that can't be fixed by your typical 'choreographed elected official tearful apology.'

The cyclist’s version of what happened is great… says "I was about to look right. And then it hit," … maybe when you are 3/4 of the way through the intersection after running a red light isn’t the best time to look both ways….

He apparently wants her insurance to cover his injuries and damages…. Not sure if that will fly. He caused the accident, but she committed a worse crime by leaving.

She shouldn't get a pass on leaving the scene because the biker ran the red light. I think everyone who has posted on this thread is in agreement with that statement.

Illegal passing? Cars on the left?

I'm not looking to defend the driver that hit the bicyclist, but two others stand out as significantly more problematic here.

The biker looked the wrong way first when crossing the street, too (L-R-L isn't for one way streets that go from your right to your left; always check oncoming traffic first and last). How does he miss all of the traffic control devices?

The other thing I haven't seen mentioned yet is the illegally parked car on the right side of the video. If that car was properly parked that potentially gives the bicyclist a better view of oncoming traffic allowing him to add a little more giddy-up or allow the driver to see the bicyclist entering the intersection and make an adjustment. Just a really, really dangerous place to park.

Both at fault here as others have said. Cyclist caused the accident by running an obvious red light. Forget the illegally parked car leading up to the intersection. Any vehicle driver would have taken that into account and been more careful to begin with. No different for a cyclist; obey the rules of the road. For him to expect her insurance to pay for it is asinine.

Second, I don't care if this woman is an elected official or not, that's a hit-and-run and she should absolutely be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

Yep, the next bicyclist I see stopping at a red light like everyone else will be the first.
And they wonder why the get honked at. They only want to "share the road" when it benefits them.

Yeah, at the beginning of the video the biker is riding on the wrong side of the road passing all the cars stopped for the light on the left.. if it illegal to do in a car, it's illegal to do on a bike. It's just one of the dumb things he did to cause the accident.
