You can answer the poll twice. If you answer yes to the first part, you can answer the second part of the poll about McCarthy.

An official bipartisan visit might be seen as a bigger deal, and thus more “provocative”. It seems we don’t want this visit seen as official U.S. govt policy.

That being said, I’d be in inclined to say who cares what China thinks and to send a whole gaggle of people. Unfortunately McCarthy is a clown. It’s hard to make a bipartisan foreign visit these days. There are only a handful of credible republicans in the House of Reps.

If you are going to go, it would be much better if it were done with a United front. Even if that’s McCarthy (though I do wish it were someone less clownish). But either we stand with Taiwan or we don’t. It’s not dems standing with them, it’s the US.

Pelosi and McCarthy going would show that the US, while we have political differences at home, we are united as a country abroad.

I voted not at all since it wont make a difference. The US leadership is a bad joke and the Chinese know it.

You did not have an option for : Yes - they should both go, but McCarthy should be permanently left in Taiwan - thus improving foreign and domestic relations.

China warns US fighter jets escorting Pelosi to Taiwan could be shot

If US warplanes escort Pelosi’s plane to Taiwan, that is an invasion.” The PLA has the authority to forcibly destroy Pelosi’s plane and US warplanes, including warning fire and tactical interference. If they are not effective, leave them,” Hu Sijin, a Global Times commentator linked to the state of China, wrote on Twitter.

China, I didn’t have an issue with you showing your disapproval of Pelosi’s visit. Although, once I see one of your spokesmen broadcast to the world and your people, a threat towards our leaders and those the Americans that protect our political leaders. Screw (&$@%) you (sorry moderators).

I am not a fan of Pelosi and if this article was written with Greene, Cruz, McConnell(more likely out of the three); I would feel the same way. You do not threaten our leaders and if you really want to screw up, don’t also threaten those that protect them!

Pelosi needs to take the trip!

If her goal is the start a war... and to give Taiwan to China after said war then she should go an visit. Lol... Not really, but it is interesting that China is NOT impressed with Pelosi's visit to Taiwan.

China announces military exercise off Taiwan ahead of possible Nancy Pelosi visit

China announced on Friday July 29 the organization of a military exercise on Saturday “live ammunition” in the Taiwan Strait, an initiative taken when the leader of the American deputies, Nancy Pelosi, could soon go to the island.

The maneuvers will however be limited in area and will take place in the immediate vicinity of the Chinese coast. China considers Taiwan, with a population of around 23 million, to be one of its provinces, which it has yet to successfully reunify with the rest of its territory since the end of the Chinese Civil War, in 1949.

I would have said no until McC Jr was included. Now it seems like an opportunity for a trade. Like, say, a few thousand iPhones. 13’s or NO DEAL!!!

But not nearly as much as the guy likely to replace her come January, you know the one who begged the former president to call off his version of the brown shirts on January 6th before reversing course and flying down to Mar-a-Lago to kiss the ring of the Dear Leader.

We could escort the Speaker’s plane with fighters that China could not find or detect, much less maneuver against for a shot. If China wants to gets a sense of the degree that they are still massively outclassed in the air domain, then they should definitely try to intercept the Speaker’s plane in international airspace.

No point in provoking China at this point.

The US May have intelligence which demands we show unity with Taiwan at this point. Otherwise, I don’t see the point.

Well, that’s the question, isn’t it? Are we provoking China by carrying out a state visit from one of our legislators? They are the ones making threats that we know they can’t and won’t carry out. If we follow through and they do nothing, they lose face. If we follow up, and they do something, then they lose something far worse than face. So it’s time for us to get that they are the ones in a dilemma of their own making, not us. We’ve been playing by Western rules in an Eastern game for a few decades now. It’s time to show them that we are not even marginally intimidated by their threats, or this gets worse.

With CHIPS Act passing… are we basically saying good-bye to the people of Taiwan?

Intel, AMD, and TI are going to the moon

Good point, but it's moot now. Once committed, Pelosi couldn't back out. I would note, though, that successive administrations have made it crystal clear that we consider Taiwan its own country and an ally we will defend. I'm just not sure we need to underline that with a visit by Pelosi unless there is some intelligence that China is poised to take some kind of action against Taiwan which such a visit is intended to discourage.

Other than a misspeak or two, I don’t think that’s clear at all. The official policy of this country is One China, going back to Carter. We have publicly declared that we will not become involved as long as China seeks unification through peaceful means and have been deliberately ambiguous about what we would do in the event of other-than-peaceful means. Now speaking for self, I think it’s time to re-examine a policy that made sense in the late 1970s, pre-Tiananmen, pre-Soviet breakup, pre-unending string of BS from China, and pre-Ukrainian invasion. But that has not yet happened.

Interesting that a speaker has not visited Taiwan since Gingrich 25yrs ago. Hard for me to understand why this is such a problem for China. I guess it's all about the separatist perception. But if we want to send Pelosi or McCarthy or Harris or Biden, we darn well should. It's a great place with some of the most amazing fresh food on the planet. And who wouldn't enjoy a visit to the Hotel Grand Palace?

Side note: The buffet has a pour-your-own tap.
