We can pretend that college football is for semi-pro players of we can pretend it's for student athletes... I prefer that they play for a university/college and keep some of the traditions in tact lest we lose more people's interest in the musing of these young men and their ridiculous wants and needs at the expense of a national tradition of college football and past college football players and their legacies.

We are the only country on Earth that has this rich history of student athletes competing in football at our colleges and universities as student athletes and it's worth saving. The money if costs to keep these student athletes fed... in classrooms with tutor/s is NOT free and it's still a balancing act to make all sports feasible. So all the revenue made from football is and should be shared with other nonprofitable sports which are also worth keeping. Some colleges make NO profits and they still have players willing to play the game.

Before we let young players that are less than able to go to college for several reasons, not the least of which is the entrance requirements, it was known that playing football was a privilege that might even pay dividends after the student athletes graduate and then maybe play professional football. That and a free college educations seemed to be enough for these grateful students for over 100+ years... while colleges were still making millions of dollars of profits on the game. What changed?

It's the players that see college as a way to make a living without even caring about an education, some don't care about all the other university/college expenditures and how football funds not just their food...room... medical... tutors... and specialized coaching and training, but it pays for other sports' student athletes and their needs too.

We can either keep the 150+ years of college football tradition in tact or we can find a way to change the students athletes that we sign... I think we can find an amicable accommodation for both sides.

It's really all UF's money not just the football teams. They absolutely should use it to fund the other sports like golf, and the women's teams, and gymnastics etc. Obviously they should make sure the bread winners are well taken care of ( housing, top notch facilities, training etc) but being able to provide a competitive outlet for players in those other sports is a vital role in a lot of these kids lives who weren't born with the physical traits to play a sport like football. Not to mention a lot of those sports are not very spectator friendly, you'll never see 90k+ fans watching a golf tourney live. If they go pro, then yes, but only thru TV broadcasts. Track and field, gymnastics, swimming draw moderate viewing #'s, don't make much on attendence, but those are the sports UF gets Olympic recognition with. They probably couldn't survive with out football.

I kind of compare it too a department store with a different variety of departments. There's always gonna be one department that bring in the big money (ie: jewelry or electronic dept) while other departments sometimes exist solely to provide for the needs of those who seek what ever it is they carry and not so much the profits off of that department.

Oh I really do get what your saying but as far as a business model , I don’t know, it kind of like socialism. One group doesn’t produce but has to be provided for by the ones that do. Maybe football should have the choice since they are the ones producing.

I like your point, and I think that's what disturbs me about NIL. These kid's are being enticed, PRIMARILY, by $$; and that's before before they demonstrate their worth! An employer who overpays an employee is a fool! Allow me to contradict myself, though. Miami LOOKS like the biggest moron, but their getting MORE THAN THEY HAVE EVEN BARGAINED FOR. I guess we'll see if their risk backfires or pays enormous dividends. I have to question Rashada's character, for example, who appears to be all about the money. The saying, "The Devil's in the details," causes me to think Miami didn't learn a darn thing.from sanctions a few years ago. To throw millions at one player raises huge red flags!!!

LOL, That would be more if UF had to pay for other less profitable schools. In this example all the sports money belongs to UF for them to distribute how they see fit. Kind of more like if one of your kids did all the house work but all the siblings got an allowance

When I was a freshman at UF in 1970, I had a PE coach who was an assistant coach on the swimming team. He went on to become the head coach at Texas and won 15 or so national championships.

I agree but I think Miami was paying when they won titles? Georgia, Bama, OSU , Clemson?

Because his brother was coaching UF and putting together the best swim program of that era, would be my guess. Eddie has the success and longevity, but Randy might have been the best ever if he had lenghty career.

Did we have a men's and woman's coach? Or just one coach much like we had in track that last couple of years?

Randy Reese had both men and women....it has gone back and forth between one and 2 coaches since he left.
Coach Nesty added the women to his men's duties a year or so ago

They won’t be “student-athletes” for their entire lives now will they?

I’m going to work on having a few other kids now and hope the athletic genetics deficiency works itself out. Naming my new kids Amazon, Ford, Pepsilicious, and Sunny D

I hope all of this NIL blows up due to absolutely no plan it seems when implemented. Hell, I bet most of these kids don’t even know they’ll pay taxes on their “earnings”.

This NIL system isn’t sustainable in the long run. Until then we have to endure fake and bought rosters. I’m guessing soon the athletes will be allowed to fail a semester before being ruled not eligible.

But while they’re in school they are. They’ll have two routes. Become a pro in their sport or graduate and use their degree.

Yea, that’s my point. Most of them won’t play professional football and should be more focused on their academics.
