52 percent of people fear they are in danger daily

In North Carolina, I fear everyday that I am going to be overwhelmed by ignorance when I walk out the door. Other than that, I don't fear anyone.

 

Not all the highest violent crime rates are in our perception of urban jungles. Among the cities with the highest rates are Little Rock, AR, Rockford IL, Stockton, CA, Albuquerque NM, Springfield, MO, San Bernadino, Anchorage, AK and Lansing, MI. Of the 10 largest cities, Chicago was the only one ranked in the top 20 coming in at #20.

 

Been riding the CTA green line through the west side to downtown for 20 years. Never been afraid. I stay vigilant, try not to appear vulnerable and remain calm when things get ugly. Often ride my bike through the hood on my way to the Bloomingdale bike trail on weekends. Nobody's too interested in an old white guy on a bicycle.

This is my city. Not letting crime statistics keep me from enjoying it's abundant pleasures.

 

It's not ignorance, it's purposeful.

 

Of course but even in those cities the issues lie in the denser urban areas statistically. I would assume they are like their bigger counterparts in that the people living 15 miles out in the country have less fear than those living right next to each other in apartments or aging industrial areas etc

 

I didn't see the raw data or many breakdowns other than age. It would be interesting to see a breakdown by gender, residential density, and political affiliation. It did surprise me a bit that younger people are reportedly more fearful than older people - in part because I tend to think of younger people feeling invincible or oblivious to dangers and older folks following the news and worrying a lot.

 

So here is what I see from Gallup at least.

That women are more fearful than men. 18-29 year olds are less worried than other age groups. For density, the most worried are in big and small cities followed by rural areas and suburban folks are the least worried. The biggest gap is that Republicans are more fearful than Democrats (by a margin of 18%). That is particularly interesting given that Democrats are more likely than Republicans to be younger, more likely to live in cities, and more likely to be women.

The below paragraphs are interesting to me and may back the notion that much of Americans' fears related to crime and violence is based upon partisan feelings or perceptions.

Looking specifically at party identification, Democrats were generally more likely than Republicans to say they worried a great deal about crime between 2001 and 2015. However, in 2016 and 2017, Republicans' worry outpaced Democrats' for the first time.


Partisans' relative worry shifted again in 2018, the second year of Donald Trump's presidency, with Democratic concern increasing and Republican concern declining. In 2019, Democrats' worry receded and has been below 50% since. Republicans' worry about crime has risen sharply since Joe Biden became president, including an eight-point increase this year.

 

Danger of running out of coffee?

 

Things were just fine in our world until my kids started drinking it. This morning I get up and its a 3 way fight over the last scoop. (Wife does decaf so she isnt involved.)

Neat. What's the crime like in the most liberal areas of the US? All the conservative cities and towns I've visited or lived in were extremely safe.

 

Thanks for making that summary. There’s some interesting points in there to consider.
Something I thought of was related to liberals living in higher density and being younger yet remained less worried about crime. But remember the liberals agenda did recently include defunding the police. It leads me to believe you’re less afraid of crime if you’d be in favor of defunding cops.
Conservatives typically are less likely to do things like bungee jump too. We’re a cautious folk compared to our fearless counterparts.

 

Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, New Orleans, Nashville, Jacksonville, Mobile, Gainesville, Fort Walton Beach, Pensacola, and a few other more "rural" settings. Still here, but I do live a much lower "profile" life now.

 

I think the "defund the police" slogan was dumb. But I don't think that's supported by most Democrats in office, and I'm not sure how many law enforcement budgets have actually been significantly cut relative to other budget items. I do think it's a fair discussion to have about perhaps getting more folks involved in the community with a background in mental health problems, de-escalating disputes, etc. That shouldn't involve taking good cops off the streets though IMO. If anything, I think cops are being asked to do too much with too little.

I don't know if conservatives as a whole are less likely to bungee jump or take such risks. It would be interesting to know but I think we'd have to account for age.

 

Awhile back wife and I vacationed in Chicago, road public transit.etc.Couple of rural living relatives thought we were crazy. They thought we would be crime victims and worse based on their media sources. Had a great time, no issues.
The only time Ive been scared of our safety was driving thru rural Tennessee and we lived in Miami during the cocaine cowboy days. Mugged once in gville during college also by a couple locals. Not scared of gville tho.

Plenty of rural folks are simply afraid of urban areas and their diversity based on their media sources. Their loss.
