A good summary of the movement to create a sub-culture (or sub-country really) within America by the right. Basically its another assault by the red states to suppress the rights of Americans within their state borders.. last time being Jim Crow. Everything old is new again, or history repeats itself if you prefer. Red states are building a nation within a nation - CNNPolitics "It's not at the level of Jim Crow, or certainly the difference between slave states and free states, but the differences are major," says Jake Grumbach, a University of Washington political scientist who studies divergence among the states. And like Kettl, Grumbach believes the economic and political differences between the red and blue states are on track to only widen. Seen as a whole, the red states' drive to set their own rules, while blocking any interference from either blue-leaning local governments or a Democratic-controlled federal government, represents the broadest effort to carve out a separate sphere of influence since the fierce resistance to reconstruction across the South after the Civil War that ultimately led to Jim Crow segregation, Kettl believes. In some respects, he argues, red states are displaying a greater separatist impulse today than the South did then. For now, Kettl sees the initial red state Republican goal primarily as consolidating these new rules and blocking any interference -- what he calls "an effort to build very high castle walls with a very deep moat." But like Grumbach and other experts on state policy, Kettl is dubious that Republicans will settle for imposing their values solely on the states now under their control. As the red states pursue a more consistent and coordinated course, Kettl predicts that Republicans will "try to impose [this] policy on the nation as a whole" if they achieve the federal power to do so. Blue states such as California, New York, Illinois and Colorado have moved forcefully over the past two years to expand many of the liberties now under siege in the red states. But congressional Republicans while in the minority have already introduced proposals that would apply the red state rules across the entire nation on many of these same issues. The new social order red states are now sketching behind their "castle" walls may offer the best preview of what Republicans will try to impose on all states the next time they achieve unified control of the White House and Congress in Washington.
Sovereign citizens gone wild. Decades of planning and staging court candidates, etc. Really the only thing remotely approaching a deep state. Meanwhile, genders and archeology oh my.
Is this serious? Lol… I live in the country and I don’t think we got the handbook. Shit, I think some of my neighbors are libbies. I’m freaking out!
Lel... This cnn opinion piece bends over backwards to try and make statistics work. If there are 2 America's it's CNN's fault.
I can't help but chuckle when Republicans try to claim what they really want is limited government and people to be just left alone. Their current movement is all about imposing their brand of white Christian nationalism on the country as a whole, particularly on people who are "others" to them.
Interesting, isn't the point that the party with the most power/influence directs the nation in the direction of that party's platform? This opinion piece can easily be reversed saying the democrats are trying to impose their policies across the entire nation and the red states are protecting themselves against the progressive attack. One person's interference can be the others protection.
1. Put New Jersey at the top of these blue states and the list becomes a group of states experiencing the highest levels of population loss to free states headed up by Florida and Texas. Why is that? It really makes Gavin Newsome's advertising in Florida and Texas touting California an even bigger joke under democrat rule than it is without drawing notice to the differences nationally. People are voting with where they choose to live. 2. Silly me, I thought the US was a republic with a two-party system. CNN is just confirming that the US is a banana republic since July 2016. 3. Red states ended federal unemployment in May and June 2021 while the federal government let the federal unemployment provisions run out at the end of September 2021 over the objections of democratic congressmen. Of course, Joe Biden took credit for the immediate increased hiring achieved in the red states. Never mind that the republican governors should have gotten a pat on the back for being more forward thinking than the Biden Administration. 4. I thank God I live in the Free State of Florida which is the #1 red state for leading in initiatives that the majority of citizens want and that are attracting people from blue states who want to live in freedom rather than the tyranny of the blue states they are running from. I just hope they deregister from the state they are fleeing and register as republicans when they get to Florida. This may well be happening as there are more republicans than democrats in Florida for the first time and the difference in the republican's favor is growing daily. I'm also thankful that the Free State of Florida has the best governor in the nation. 5. Red States aren't building a nation within a nation any more than the blue states. We can only make rules for the states in which we live. In my view, the red states are leading the nation rather than building a new nation. Again, the people are voting with where they choose to live. In November, they will be voting for changes where they live.
The assault on human rights in red states is a very recent movement - we'll see if it affects peoples choices to live there in the future. Show me on this graph exactly when Florida became the destination for conservatives... Looks like around 1960's/70's when A/C became common people started flocking there through Democrat and Republican administrations. It's a purple state. It's not a red haven being flocked to nor converting anyone on culture. Nice fantasy. Florida Population
In theory, but we have been fity fity for a while. Whoever wins will claim a mandate they don’t have, rinse and repeat. Pendulum Politics not remotely close to governance. Why I say they should require 50% of each party to pass legislation, it will either blow up or drive it to the center.
Hrm when did it start feeling like 2 America's? I reckon about 2008. Strange that's when headline news became cnn.
Well, that isn't true. The only states experiencing population loss are West Virginia, Mississippi, and Illinois, in that order from greatest loss to least. New Jersey grew by 5.7% in the last census. You are referring to domestic population shifts, which is just one source of population change. Unemployment continues to exist in all states. You are referring to extended unemployment benefits. BTW, there was not a difference in hiring rates between states that got rid of extended unemployment earlier and those that got rid of it later.
All this talk of red vs blue states is basically "who's d*** is bigger." Blue states need China. Red States need China. While we fight over pronouns, who started inflation (both inept parties), and abortion (screwed up by both parties), our adversaries are going to wipe us off the map without firing a shot. My suggestion is start thinking about what a compromise is or in 20-30 years, you will be poor, and under communist rule.
This is 3 months old, but better than looking back at a census report: States People Are Fleeing And States People Are Moving To – Forbes Home Top 10 States Moving From: 1. California 2. New York 3. Illinois 4. Pennsylvania 5. Massachusetts 6. Washington 7. Colorado 8. Indiana 9. Michigan 10. Wisconsin The only thing that surprises me on this list is the absence of New Jersey. The Top 10 States Moving To: 1. Texas 2. Florida 3. South Carolina 4. North Carolina 5. Georgia 6. Tennessee 7. Nevada 8. Maine 9. Delaware 10. Idaho The only thing that surprises me on this list is that Georgia is at #5 with the state being a deep south swing state.
Again, that captures one kind of population change: domestic movement. It ignores the other types of population changes: births, deaths, and international movement. Places with younger populations, on average, tend to see net outflows of domestic movement while places with older populations tend to see net inflows.
