To give perspective on why this law is being pushed by the democrats now, Clarence Thomas called for a review of an old SCOTUS case the made it illegal for states to ban birth control -- under the same philosophy they used to overturn Roe v. Wade . So I don't think that SCOTUS ruling in favor of condoms is a given, and yes, there are conservatives who believe Americans don't have a right to use condoms or any other birth control.

 

Said it before, one of the most effective policies to prevent unwanted pregnancies and thus elective abortions is to provide easy access to contraception yet there is probably a close to 100 percent overlap between those Republicans opposed to codifying Roe and those opposed to guaranteeing access to contraceptives.

 

Remember in slasher movies the couple that has sex gets killed first and the virgin survives. Self flagellation of desire, mostly figurative except for Opus Dei, occupies a primal pre-rational part of our lizard brain. We often battle our inner demons, usually unsuccessfully, by projecting and oppressing

I’m assuming their logic in voting against this, assuming there was any, is “states rights” or some such nonsense. So I guess at this point we can safely say the GOP puts states rights > individual rights. Can’t wait to see the first deep red state to ban contraception, it doesn’t even seem crazy to think they will, I’d almost lean towards it being inevitable.

I agree. It matches with the instruction given in Genesis 1:28 - to have dominion over all the earth, to be fruitful and multiply - that the Christian Dominionists / Nationalists believe grants them the authority to enforce what they believe to be the will of God. And as we have observed on this forum, some will not stop short of that.

 

This isn't just about condoms.

According to The Wall Street Journal, “The legislation protects access to any contraceptive device, including all contraceptive products approved by the Food and Drug Administration, including intrauterine devices known as IUDs and emergency contraception such as Plan B.”

Inclusion of IUDs and Plan B is believed to reduce the chance that Republicans in the Senate will support the measure because both of those can terminate a pregnancy within days of conception. And to overcome the filibuster, 10 Republicans would have to agree to it.

I'm totally in favor of this legislation, but it's more ambitious than just outlawing condoms.

 

There is a semantical game going on there. IUDs have never even been proven to block implantation after fertilization. It’s theoretical but almost certainly doesn’t happen. And this argument only applies if you think “pregnancy” begins at fertilization rather than implantation, a seriously problematic conclusion

 

I have literally never heard a republican mention any issue with Condoms/Birth control.

Not once in my whole life.

Then why did 195 republican representatives vote against this bill? That is the topic, maybe you can enlighten us.

 

Haven't read it, but my guess is it wasn't because of condoms. As is often the case there is likely more stuff in there.

 

I'd guess ain't none of it the government's bidness. Well, according to us limited gov types.

 

1. Why are you screaming?.
2. You do understand that they are likely doing this because the bill protects post conception drugs. (You may not be aware, but that isnt condoms.)
3. You see bills are filled with things and often have one or two sticking points. Thats how politics work. Take the post conception stuff out and "voila" , condoms wont be in jeopardy.
