Would bet she’s a pariah now in the department if she was the one who turned him in.

good on you. My hips still get super stiff on the higher kicks. Big fan of combo of MT and BJJ.

Agree, but would suggest that the training use this video as a perfect response from her. The hand-to-hand combat training would be for instances where appropriate. If she were alone and facing such a threat, I might feel differently.

Bjj AND Muay Thai. Someone is about to their butt kicked. Man I miss Anderson Silva in his prime..

Officer Silva, do you need backup?
    No, I have it handled.

The headline the next day: Single officer subdues group of 11 violent men.

maybe so, but coming from someone around it, there is a switch that clicks when anyone puts a hand on your neck be it friend or foe. Again not giving her a hard time. I’m picking nits from a fighters perspective. Just saying based on what I saw she could benefit from some training. You can simultaneously defend and de escalate. Also based on what I saw if I reviewed the video with her my guess is she would agree and be the first one to work on it . Girl had some grit

BJJ is dangerous in today's times as well. Got in scuffle with a guy at a bar one time out in the parking lot. He ran up on me in trying to fight. Shot in with double leg and got him on the ground. Had his back in just a few seconds, mainly because he thought rolling over to his stomach was the thing to do, got my hooks in, got my choke set up and started flattening him out and the squeeze was on. His brother, my best friend, talked me into letting him go. I did.

He walked back to the bar, right as he was walking in, I yelled some choice words at him, and here he comes, full sprint back into the parking lot. The same exact thing happened, again. I'm squeezing and once again, his brother talks me into letting him go. His brother tells me the cops are on the way so I jump in the vehicle with him to get out there. We had some words, get out of the vehicle, and no me and him are fighting. He's even worse on the ground, so in short order I have him in a rear naked w/ hooks. His brother, the original guy, came out of no where and kicked me in the side of the head. I got lucky because it was a glancing blow. I've been KO'ed with a kick to the head while I was on the ground, but luckily not this time. As soon as I felt the kick, I let go, and jumped in someone's car and left. All of this happened in the span of about 5 mins.

Nobody wants to handle it like men these days. It's always jumping, cheap shots, etc. 1v1 isn't a thing anymore, imo, unless you are in a very isolated environment. I avoid confrontations in general, but especially at bars and crowded places. If you end up on the ground, there's going to be a boot party.

Excellent point. I've been there too (against multiple opponents and feeling a cheap head kick from the side). Needless to say, intentionally jumping on the ground isn't ideal if you're dealing with more than one person. That's why I think it's important to be as well-rounded as possible. I just assume no one is going to fight fair or 1 on 1 - at least when their friend is losing.

We cant get our cops to green belt level?

It's taken him like 12 months at 2 hours a week.

this is an outstanding BJJ example and very accurate in todays times. Seems UFC has made BJJ quite popular and I run into people asking about it. Hands down ( no pun intended) it’s fantastic skill to learn For grappling and tournaments but people need to know self defense is not the all-valley to be scored. If you remove striking and don’t train for multiple attackers you will take one to the head as I promise you that your head is target #1 for attacker #2

great observation. I would say the big distinction is “Grab me by the throat “. He was ready and mentally prepared. Hopefully your 11yo reacts the same way when someone does it for real. Some departments have in house instructors. Some just don’t seem to care

I've never really had a bad interaction with a police officer in my life, so my basic opinion of them is that they're decent people trying to do a difficult job well. But it's pretty clear that there are officers like this guy who think they can run roughshod over others and no one should question him.

    Philadelphia
    New Smyrna Beach around 1982.
-Correction- ( 4 Volusia) County sheriff squad cars with deputies roll up on us while at the beach.

Search the vehicle, mine, bottle of Jack in the cooler, me and 2 friends, one friend is in the coast guard. We all have short hair like my guard buddy.

Slam the cuffs on us. Back seat.
We were under observation from a condo, one of my buds had poured a drink.

I was not drinking, only a coke.
Unbeknownst to us there was a sting operation going on, cops filling up a bus. Arresting everyone for anything. Because I was driving / my car I was arrested.

What I am about to type is the truth.

On the way to the paddy wagon the deputy slams on the breaks, tells us to get out.

we started to comply, then the deputy on the passanger side accused us of trying to escape, we freeze. Then both threatened to shoot us "mother-fers" repeatedly.

We say nothing and don't move, finally cop starts driving again then the entire sequence is repeated again, slams on brakes, tells us to get out then threaten to shoot us.

Then it happened a third time.

finally cop keeps driving. As we approach the paddy wagon driver asks what we do, my Gard Buddy tells him he is in the coast guard.

they both go beserk because they assumed we were all in the Guard.

Anyway the deputies start bitching about all the paperwork hassle with service men, write me a $50.00 ticket and release us.

Never went back to New Smyrna Beach to this day.

    Great memories.

"Check this out, grab my left wrist"....

    "No, with your other hand"......

"No, turn your hand around and grab like this".....

    /pain ensues

The worst experience I ever had was a state trooper writing me a ticket one day after my birthday for an expired tag. I've been fortunate in that I've only dealt with good cops.

Oh, I'm middle aged and fat now. I could probably still hit somebody's knee and cause a serious bruise though.

I'd imagine this wasn't the first time those cops pulled that stunt on people they'd arrested either. All in all, I'd say the majority of cops are good people just trying to serve the community each and every day and then make it back home to their loved ones...on the flip side, there are a lot of them who wake up with a stiffy every morning knowing they can treat people exactly how they treated you and your buddies on a daily basis, and get away with it because their coworkers won't tell. If this female officer hadn't been present, those other cowards would've kept their lips sealed and when asked why the suspect's face was bloody and bruised they'd just give their usual excuse.

Geez. Yeah that was pretty bad.
Worst I ever had was three of us on two lane rural road somewhere in Georgia one night. Road was empty. Got pulled over for speeding and had to follow the officer to a closed gas station where the chief sat in his car.
Had to pay cash, maybe $60-$80 or something and we were on our way.
Never knew if they split it 50-50 or whether the chief got more.
