NFL teams are worth anywhere from 3-6 Billion dollars and you are upset over player salaries? The salary cap in 2022 is 208 million spread over 53 players(avg 3.9 million per player) The top 8-10 guys take up 50/60% of that, so that leaves 40+ players making 2 million or less. With a medium under 1 million.
Player salary is pennies compared to the value of the team. But does make up 50+% of yearly revenue.

You must hate BB/Baseball because on avg they make more than NFL players.

Let me clarify: my concern with professional sports in general and the NFL in particular is money and corruption; and I have the same concern for college football. Who thinks these teenagers have the emotional maturity or moral integrity to handle what is currently happening? I, for one, fear the great experiment of NIL!

I hope the players drain the suckers "donating" money to these collectives dry.

    Take them for every penny.

Schools offer the education and facilities to entice the player to choose them. It became an arms race to attract the best players. That is on the school.

NIL is entirely on the fans and yahoos who want to buy wins just so they can say " my team" is a champion.

Also can you clarify money and corruption in the NFL?
As for money, I think I explained that one. Money in the NFL is dependent on the fans willingness to buy the product. And from the value of the teams and the money it generates, the fans are willing to spend.

Corruption? Sure there are a few bad apples that get all the attention but as someone who has worked with multiple NFL players, the vast majority are hardworking, charitable men who use their position for good in the community.

BTW do you feel the same about doctors? Do you think they are overpaid and the healthcare industry is corrupt?
I for one think Drs should be compensated for the work, time and sweat they put into honing their craft, so why not players?
Healthcare is service not a right, so is football.

    Thanks for the civil discussion.

But as pointed out earlier, probably most of those 3-6 Billion $$ teams lose money each year. And none of their revenues go to support dozens of other money-losing sports. Apples and oranges to say the least

I don't think a single NFL team loses money. Plus the conversation wasn't comparing NFL to college.

I’ll bet the Detroit Lions lose money.
Interesting question because I’ve heard so many people claim that NFL teams lose money and I’ve never bothered to look at their books. But hey, sounds like you’re way closer to the league than I’ve ever been, so I’ll defer to you on this one

Nope you are right, the lions reported a loss in 2020 of 22 million. I wouldn't have thought it possible.

Arguably the worst franchise in football over the past 30+ years.

The NFL has money sharing much like the SEC and pays out all the teams

Franchise value is only real dollars to the owner once he sells...it doesn't necessarily translate into operating dollars for the franchise although they can borrow against the value of the franchise. It always amazes me that companies that never make a dime in profit like Twitter can be worth billions.

The only team you can get solid info about is Green Bay because they are publicly owned. But the fact that it’s all so clandestine suggests there is some eye-popping dough made by even the dreggiest, like the Lions.

Estimates by entities like Forbes say that rarely, but not never, a team runs red in their own operations. But they also get a monster check from revenue sharing. ~$400M this year. Teams get to keep all revenue from certain streams, like onsite concessions, parking, etc. They usually have sweet side gigs too. Ford Field is leased within a consortium but the deal includes them keeping revenue from non-NFL events, like Final Fours and such. Martha Ford put $100M into upgrades largely for that particular revenue stream.

The Lions are usually valued in the bottom three of all franchises, but even then it’s now over $2B. Most believe that the real-world number would be much higher. But the Fords seem to have zero interest in getting a quick few billion, likely because it’s a lead pipe lock that they have a perpetual cash cow even as they continue to be arguably the worst franchise ever.

IMHO, Skip is the lesser of the two brothers. Rick is one of the greatest chefs and restauranteurs in the world. Huge fan of Frontera, Topolobampo and Xoco. We always have some of his salsa or grilling sauces in the house.

I grew up watching pro football before the Superbowl was dreamt up. The game is nothing close to what it was in the 50's and 60's. Teams were identified by player loyalty rather than by lucrative contracts. Something began to happen in the 1960's with players and agents, and it snowballed. The game has always been about the Starr's and Unitas'es, but individualism absolutely took over. Yes, there are exceptional team players but the NFL has become less about the team and more about the narcissist. And it's probably the Randy Moss type player's that has given the NFL a black eye. Incidentally, I know there are NFL players that give back to their communities, but are those player's servants like Healthcare workers, First Responders, and our military men and women? I, for one, cannot make a comparable analysis with those who put their lives, DAILY, on the line to those who play on the gridiron. I highly respect the talent that laces up each week and takes a pounding; ALL for the Gipper. However, the pandemic servants I have observed over the last two years are the true heroes I salute. These men and women have redefined "service," and what they get paid is miniscule to what they contribute. I probably would have to write a book (which no one would read, BTW) to make the case for money and corruption in the NFL. Suffice it to say, though, that it has slowly and subtly occurred over decades. And,, who are the few to have even noticed? Finally, my family has fought in every engagement since the Revolutionary War, and I am jealously loyal to THEIR SERVICE AND ULTIMATE GIFT OF THEIR LIVES IN BATTLE! Many of our war heroes shed their blood for our freedom! Everytime I attend a flag-draped funeral, the representation of what the USA means to me is revisited. How dare those NFL players piss on my relatives graves and dishonor the flag and national anthem for a political cause! Some of my generation--not all--can stomach what has happened to the NFL and what I fear is happening now to college football! So, thanks for asking!

Wow, none of that has anything to do with the conversation but basically you are just a senior yelling at clouds and for days remembered, days when looked at with out the bias of what you think you remember aren't as as rosey as you make them out to be.

Thank you for your family's service.

The majority of those players, playing for the gipper, were left broken in body and broken financially. They were also left forgotten by the very teams they were loyal to. If it were not for the players that came after then demanding more(pay, benefits, pensions, healthcare) those older players would be even worse off. It was these newer players you dislike that have gotten the older players taken care of.
