I would only add to this conversation that some exceptional people don't need a degree to be a good teacher, especially in the lower grades. Having said that, this bill is narrowly aimed at veterans and seems to be more politics than what is best for our children.

It’s analogous to a 401K, you can take it with you after a year.

Interesting. Is there no more vesting in the state? How about teachers who opt for the pension plan?

You are vested in 8 years for the traditional pension plan.

There may be some exceptions, but teacher preparation tends to be pretty extensive. In addition to the education psychology & pedagogy course work, there is a great amount of field work required for the degree and license. In MN, teacher candidates have to complete 100hrs in the field prior to student teaching, which is a semester-long internship. My discipline is P12, so candidates are required field experiences in elementary, middle, and high schools. These are pretty standard practice among the states that take teacher prep seriously.

Somebody might be a natural at teaching, but a great deal of on-the-job learning takes place already. Put somebody in the classroom who has not been through pedagogy coursework, education psychology & policy classes, etc. would be starting at ground zero. It's like saying someone could be a nurse practitioner w/o having earned the credential.

And I don't agree with your suggestion re: Lower grades. Teaching kindergarteners is every bit as complicated as teaching HS biology, perhaps more so. .

Thanks. I think you're more right than I am. You might be interested to know that I have a M.Ed from UF and was working toward a PhD when I got interested in education law and changed careers and went to law school. That was decades ago, and I'm sure a lot has changed since then. I have a deep respect for and commitment to public education, and it has disturbed me deeply to see so many private schools, especially Christian ones, spring up over the last decades. I understand why parents send their children to private schools, and I'm not categorically against them - at least not non-Christian private schools - but I do wonder if this is what's best for our country.

PS: If you're a public school teacher, thank you for your service.

If that's a true story, the new teacher won't last more than a few months. I don't expect these kinds of certificates to be widespread, but it sure is a bad idea and will in no way solve the teacher shortage. Get smarter, Florida . . . . . please.

The labor market is so tight right now, you scrap the bottom of the barrel sometimes just to get a body. And that's incredibly sad in a profession like teaching.

The new law doesn't allow for this kind of certification for spouses. Spouses only get the fees waived.

Placing an unqualified person in charge of the physical and emotional well-being of children is dangerous. People can poo-poo the qualifications of teachers (I realize you are not), but it's vital that teachers have adequate education, training, and field work prior to hitting the ground in the classroom.
Per @philnotfil's previous post, it appears this may not be an accurate tweet.

So, will parents be allowed to demand to see the college education records for their kid's teacher? And, demand reassignment if their child has some unqualified DeSantis created Insta-teacher?
