I'm not sure how I feel about this, but 5 years is a really long time.

I read about this yesterday AND double checked on the DOE website to verify. This is a REALLY bad idea.

Putting someone in a classroom without a degree in anything, let alone education is asking for trouble. Who is going to be tasked with getting this person through their day? A veteran teacher, that’s who.

And on a personal note, I just had to pay to renew my certificate and they’ll get theirs for free. I realize that this is just more pandering from DeSantis but still….

Is this in response to our immediate need for teachers due to the anticipated shortfall?

Republican legislators in Florida have been saying a teacher doesn’t need a college degree for years, so this isn’t a surprise. They’re pushing this as a way to help veterans, but in reality it’s just another way to bring public schools down to voucher school level. Pay teachers minimum wage, make them at-will employees, and install MAGA evangelicals to groom and indoctrinate future storm troopers.

You left out the part where they do all that and then blame public schools for hiring unqualified teachers and declare the whole system needs to be razed.

Well, it's a certificate and not a degree. Does not make them eligible for a degree-required position. Any employer that uses this as a reason to hire them would probably hire them anyways without this certificate. So this is really just a pandering nothing burger to a particular voting crowd.

Well I guess they can be armed now, smdh. Just another press stunt. I thought DeSantis started out pretty good, then running for a higher office started.

Yes, and a very poorly thought out response masked in the assumption that the veteran will also provide some sense of security. First, the structure of the military does nothing to prepare you for the structure of a school environment so the average veteran default path to solve a problem will not work. Second, very few veterans actually have any sort of training that would benefit the security situation at all. Third, fix the problem (over regulation, radical parents, too much admin) instead of trying to recruit more right leaning people to become school system employees. Bad, bad idea

Yeah I re-read a little more carefully. Makes post #7 a little off the mark. Oh well.

I wonder how many vets will even take advantage of this opportunity?

agreed, there seems to be no shortage of work opportunity out there right now if one wants to work. Some may want to work in that type of structured system again though, and who wouldn't want 2 months off every summer. I could do some really awesome trips with 2 months every summer.

Doesn't matter, DeSantis has already gotten what he wanted out of this publicity stunt.

So the spouse of veteran that doesn't have a high school diploma, takes 3 attempts to get their GED, is now able to teach in the State of Florida for 5 years? And let me guess, starting off at the same pay as degreed and certified teachers?

No. 60 hrs of college courses required so presumably that could not happen without at least a HS diploma or GED.

That is the Arizona bill you are thinking of. In Arizona they only have to be enrolled in college to be eligible for a teaching certificate. In Florida they have to have at least 60 hours under their belt.

Any idea if they receive the same starting pay that degreed/certified teachers get?

The 'good' news is very few new teachers last that long anyways :)
