https://www.washingtonpost.com/worl...62d81c-0163-11ed-8beb-2b4e481b1500_story.html THIS is what I am talking about. Right wingers...how can you support this? Because of Orbán's curtailing of press freedom, erosion of judicial independence and undermining of multiparty democracy, many political scientists and watchdogs consider Hungary to have experienced democratic backsliding during Orbán's tenure.[3][4][5][6][7] Orbán's attacks on the European Union while accepting its money and funneling it to his allies and family have also led to characterizations of his government as a kleptocracy.[8] Between 2010 and 2020, Hungary dropped 69 places in the Press Freedom Index[9][10] and 11 places in the Democracy Index;[11][12] Freedom House has downgraded the country from "free" to "partly free."[13] Orbán defends his policies as "illiberal democracy."[14][15] As a result, Fidesz was suspended from the European People's Party from March 2019[16] until March 2021, when Fidesz left the EPP over a dispute over new rule-of-law language in the latter's bylaws.[17] Anti-LGBT policies Since his election as prime minister in 2010, Orbán has led initiatives and laws to hinder human rights of LGBT+ people, regarding those as "not compatible with Christian values." In 2020, Orbán's government ended legal recognition of transgender people, receiving widespread criticism both in Hungary and abroad.[125] In 2021 his party proposed legislation to censor any "LGBT+ positive content" in movies, books or public advertisements and to severely restrict sex education in school forbidding any information thought to "encourage gender change or homosexuality". The law has been likened to Russia's restriction on "homosexual propaganda."[126] German Chancellor Angela Merkel and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen harshly criticized the law,[127] while a letter from sixteen EU leaders including Pedro Sánchez and Mario Draghi warned against “threats against fundamental rights and in particular the principle of non-discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation”.[128] WHich right winger on here supports this type of person? WHich of you supports running America this way? Defend yourselves. This is unacceptable. Your party is off the rails. Freaking do something. Do any of you even care?
It’s sort of funny to me that the US just announced they will pull out of the US-Hungary bi-lateral treaty. The GOP had been cozy with Orban countervailing the Treasury’s attempts whilst Senator Mr Libertarian Rand Paul blocked the treaty.
Well, they had CPAC in Hungary just so they could cozy up to the authoritarian bigot. Based on the way Ron DeSantis behaves, Orban must be his hero. I'm surprised Florida didn't fight Texas for him to come.
Kind of amazing how American conservatism evolved from the near libertarianism of Barry Goldwater to the authoritarianism of Donald Trump and Viktor Orban.
Depressing was the word that I was thinking of, but if you don't have any emotional attachment to conservatism, the dramatic shift in what they say they believe in has been kind of amazing.
That intro could easily be a GOP platform in any state here. Texas’ might actually be worse. I suppose it couldn’t be the national platform though, since that one is just a Truth Social stream of consciousness ramble now.
Is it me or did this thread land with a very gigantic thud? You guys find some bs article about Eastern Europe and suddenly all conservatives are linked to their policies? Is this serious? Seek help people.
Its no longer about traditional conservative values. Though they won't admit it, today's Republicans are all about grievances - race, immigrants, BLM, LBQT, and so on. The great irony is that they also associate themselves with Christian values. In truth, they've made a pact with the Devil. America won't be a better place, but will more resemble 1933 Germany.
While they're in agreement on a number of issues (gun control, government regulations, taxes, etc) libertarians like Goldwater were definitely not theocrats like the current crop of Republicans. GOLDWATER VOWS TO FIGHT TACTICS OF 'NEW RIGHT' (Published 1981)
it’s what happens when Demographics are shifting away from them, and they don’t want to open up the tent to be more inclusive. Democracy worked, until it didn’t anymore.
This is who they are. And those who stand with CPAC support this. So, pay attention to who goes and who speaks there. And who supports them here. This isn’t a “both sides” suck issue. And there is nothing traditionally conservative about CPAC or the dominant element of the GOP.
