All that does is illustrate the problem with refineries. They’re a necessary evil - absurdly expensive, exhaust a crazy amount of carcinogens, and can be quite unsafe.

The largest oil refinery on the entire east coast (335k barrels per day) shut down when Trump was in office. They had aging infrastructure which was massively expensive to maintain and they were having explosions. It went into chapter 11 and 950 miles of pipe was removed from the site to redevelop the location.

 

Fox News ran stories yesterday of how falling gas prices hurt mom and pop gas stations.

 

Although they have avoided them so far if record heat continues in Texas they could be in store for rolling blackouts.

Sure, all of that may be true however, we have no plan to transition. Our demands are increasing yearly, there is no way to get to the dream of being off fossil fuels by 2050.

No major company will plan on setting aside billions to expand while being told they are done. In addition they are having an increasing hard time securing funding as there is a movement to not finance them from the enviro green crowd. Watch what happens in 5-10 years as Asia needs more and we keep spinning our wheels, prices will go through the roof.

I don’t disagree with no plan. I’m not sure we could even get one through in the current political environment. I suspect that we will carry on until it becomes an emergency and we will act in a reactionary manner.

 

Trouble is the idea of going no ICE engines in 8 years is crazy (Cali). The grid needs to be expanded massively to support this. The plans for here don't take into account demand elsewhere across the globe, we don't live in a bubble wrt oil/gas yet some act like we do.
I'm not anti PV/Wind/Etc but regardless of wishes it will not be enough to support our demand.
Not even talking about the huge demand for REE needed to make PV/Batteries...

With the tariffs at play, it is fair to say these policies do not let the free markets (in terms of green energy) work. With the green energy infrastructure push, the wind policy sort of conflicts against itself. With tariffs, it isn’t about maximizing economic efficiency. It also isn’t just maximizing the overall use of wind. It’s purely about boosting domestic green energy production. Nonetheless, with investment will come domestic production, it just wouldn’t be as economically efficient or environmentally maximalist as if we dropped tariffs to go along with that infrastructure push. So to judge Biden i’d say he is more pro-wind with an *.

Trump was very much anti-wind energy based on his crazed rants against windmills, I’d go so far as to say he was pro-pollution. He had no interest in promoting green energy or environmental protection of any kind, and was openly hostile towards it, even if domestic producers were in favor of this sort of protectionism against Chinese competition. Trump simply never saw a tariff he didn’t like, particularly against China. The wind tariffs he put on were likely as simple as that. Tariff. China. Go.
