And from what I can make of the media coverage, it seems like Abe is probably dead but the Japanese press just uses odd euphemisms for that until the official death pronunciation comes out.

When someone's heart stops beating, that's when a "code" starts, i.e. CPR, defibrillation, that kind of thing. Until someone calls it the patient won't be pronounced dead. He's obviously an important person so even with little hope they'll probably code him for a long time.
