Is a ten year old rape victim having to drive to the next state over to get an abortion a step in the right direction for society, or a step backwards?

10 year old shouldn’t have to go anywhere to get an abortion.

I’ll quibble a bit. Rights can’t be taken out of thin air. Our rights are conferred and are enshrined in the Bill of Rights. Further, SCOTUS has conferred rights not expressly set forth in the BOR by their interpretation of the Constitution. Roe v, Wade was a perfect example. Those rights are there to be exercised - taken, if you will - by the citizenry.

They can also be taken away in the rare case. The recent SCOTUS opinion is a case in point, although one could reasonably argue they weren’t taken in that case so much as it was left up to the individual states to determine whether the right (to an abortion) should be conferred. (This is why I find the reasoning in Dobbs to be convoluted, essentially political and, thus, wrongly decided.)

You like to quibble. Nothing wrong with that. The foregoing is mine.

Rights are definitely given. That isn't to say that we shouldn't fight to keep them, but there's a reason that globally, your rights depend on how oppressive your government is. (I'm not disagreeing with you, Trickster, BTW.)

That’s why with all of our faults we still live in the greatest country in the world. Flawed yes but having lived in other countries we are still the best.

A compassionate society should be capable of doing the right thing in these terrible one-off situations without wholesale birth control abortions for all. All these horror stories are a liberal smoke screen for their depraved indifference in the opposite direction. Like everything else, just another tug of war between maniacs.

Well, I think the point is that SCOTUS just tipped the needle a little more toward the not so great side for a 10 year old that got raped.... And the people who support her rights.

What a childish response. That's the kind of dumb shit people say when they have no defense for this country denying a 10 year old rape victim the medical care she needs and deserves.

This county won’t be “the best country in the world” for long with the path it’s on.

Let’s put it this way, you are in a thread talking about a 10 year old getting knocked up (presumably rape unless the father is also a child) and denied an abortion by the state. That scenario would have only been possible deep into the 3rd world a week ago, now this is the new reality in at least several states.

Next level conservative: Force the 10 year old to marry and put the child father to work in the coal mines to cover support.

Do you think the reaction to this decision is based on the economy?

Whatever, you support the party taking right and freedoms away and doing their best to find a way make elections meaningless when they lose. A few years of Republican majority rule and we'll be a theocracy with predecided fake elections ... Like One of those counties you are talking about.

Sorry, haven’t voted for a conservative in nearly 20 years. Not sure how I’m responsible for these women’s issues that will be cropping up when you would probably celebrate these restrictions. That’s on you.

Do you really not think there is a right wing attacking in this country on abortion, gay rights, voter rights, free speech, education, freedom of religion, etc ...? Hell, Clarence Thomas wants to revisit the right of married couples to use condoms ... Wake up, bro.

That’s the big lie that people’s rights are being taken away but I guess that’s all the left has left to scare people. It’s their ace in the hole. Fortunately most people aren’t buying it.

Womens rights literally were just taken away in a large swath of the country, hasn’t all shaken out yet, we are just at the tip of the iceberg for the issues it will cause.

I’m not sure gay rights have been “taken away” per se, as it is somewhat not a settled issue to be taken away, a lot of states are doing cynical stuff on the fringes which are indirect attacks on these rights (such as FL’s own “don’t say gay” bill). A few states, emboldened by this Supreme Court, are doing insane stuff like actually contemplating criminalizing gay relationships. Clearly that extreme would be taking away gay rights. I’d be curious to see how you think Texas position of criminalization isn’t taking away their rights? Personally, these issues of gay rights are quite simple to me. All people must be treated equally in the eyes of the law. This means gay marriages must be recognized, otherwise they are not truly equal under the law. This nonsense in TX is the classic “state regulating bedrooms” that one would normally mock, like some old irrelevant law that’s been on the books for 150 years but nobody enforces. That anyone is actually proposing such laws in 2022 is both evil and unconstitutional in my view.
