that was before Covid. It is still pretty tough getting through the season virus free. Any non-guards willing to walk-on?
Not any worth playing, likely. And COVID protocols won’t go on forever. Not trying to make this #toohot, but six months is long time in the world of public health.
I'd call Felder a true 4. He's 6'7" 230 pounds with over a 7 foot wingspan. Can shoot the 3 and block shots-started 35 games for Boston College, and has 2 years left to play. The game has truly gotten much smaller. I don't think we'll have more than 6-8 games next year against teams with a 4 who is much bigger than Felder. I guess time will tell.
Like I said, likely only a problem if he has to slide over and play the 5 (I.e if we fall to the injury bug). Most teams probably are in some trouble if they lose their 5’s, so it isn’t like we are in horrible shape. But if there’s one spot of need, that’s probably it. A combo 4/5. I’d add that if Castleton didn’t get the dinged up shoulder last year (surgery?) and Jitiboh didn’t have a history of injuries and a history of only playing limited minutes I might not even be worried about it.
I'm not really impressed when I hear that "Player A can shoot the 3." I can shoot the 3, too. It's making them that I struggle with.
I have been gone for seventeen days, I was hoping we could pull another big, just to be sure we have enough depth and lineups to stay with anybody, three of our four bigs were injured last year and it seems the SEC is a very physical conference, think Shag, Sir Charles, Kenny McClary, Livingston Chatman. We cannot, I say cannot go into another year hoping for the best for all our bigs. Nothing stops when the wars begin. Once again if CTG could touch base with CBN and Tony on their thoughts into the up coming season, it would be a positive sign that the coaches both see what the athletes want in this new age of NIL. Tony was the player of the the year in Florida I think I read. even if we sign another big, Tony could practice and see a few minutes and provide options. All good, six bigs, one on football scholarship, talk about depth, sharing athletes to make Florida a player again instead of losing to teams that shouldn’t even be in the games with us. Florida has advantages, let’s use them. I am a realist having been watching the Gator Basketball team since the early sixties. Does anyone know if CTG has even talk to coach Napier as to Tony possibly helping? I know he hasn’t reported/ arrived in to Gainseville yet. We need physical help!
The game has changed. You need some bigs, but I don’t think they need to be used at the same rate as the past. The Warriors just showed once again that you can dominate a physical team with athleticism, skill, and intelligence. They had 6’9” Looney coming off the bench most games. Draymond was their center at 6’7”-6’8”, then you had Otto 6’8”, Wiggins 6’7”, Klay 6’6”, and Steph 6’3”. GP2 and Poole came off the bench at 6’3” and 6’4”. Height is nice, but it’s not the most important thing. You don’t want a group of guys who are 5’10”, but if you have some really good 6’7”-6’8” guys you can win.
What happens if Colin reinsures his shoulder or some other injury? You have no depth to speak of. We don’t know what the LSU kid brings and Felder was injured most of the year. Jason we can hope for him to be in the best condition of his life or we could once again be playing into the unknown.
I feel like you missed my whole point. You don’t necessarily need a 6’10”+ starting center to win. Baylor didn’t.
I don't know for certain, but I would say Shag was about 6'-5", 160 pounds. Hard to tell because they only drew him two-dimensionally. I always liked how he could run full out in one spot for a couple of seconds before gaining any forward motion. https://i.pinimg.com/originals/04/4e/b0/044eb0f8121814abe370c5d23cedc534.gif
Don't discount that Shaggy would occasionally eat a Scooby Snack - that was the late 1960's, there's no telling what was in it!
I get that, my point is a physical big, not just an antelope. 6’8” or 9” would be fine. Also anything that anyone has question CTG about Tony Livingston getting to tryout, or has CTG even discussed this with CBN. Tony is physical and could play small ball. The final four teams get the bigs, we discuss playing small ball, sure the Golden State Warriors with a huge payroll of the greatest athletes on the earth. Their guards shoot lights out! That is not us. Let’s get physical athletes like Baylor, they had the beef/muscle. Let’s compete…..
Let me tell you about Shaq's size. I worked in a central Florida hospital and was in a hurry on break to the gift shop. Rounding the corner I ran into a wall. Lots of laughter and murmuring. I very slowly lifted my head and found I had run into a man who was incredibly wide. I had to keep lifting my head to see him. The laughter turned uproarious. I finally saw Shaq grinning down at me. He lit up the room. Gave me a story. We are not going to recruit a Shaq.
In my opinion, you’re going way too negative here. In what has to be a huge surprise in college hoops, TG comes in as a new coach, keeps 6 good players and adds 6 more. The Gators have 12 good players on this team. They have a very good blend of talented youth and experience. They go 4 deep at each of the 1-3. They have one of the best big men in the league in CC and what should be a solid backup in JJ. Golden is still looking for another big man. If he doesn’t get one, then he could look at additional walk-ons. Fudge likely would be the 3rd player at the 5 if need be. It’s hard to imagine that any walk-on would be better than Fudge at the 5. Injuries certainly can derail a college basketball team, but not many college teams go 3 or 4 deep at every position on the floor.
