Why am I not surprised? Although multiple studies have indicated that easy access to contraceptives combined with comprehensive sex education is extremely effective at preventing unwanted pregnancies and consequently abortions, both are opposed by the religious right. Although the religious right couches it's opposition to abortion by claiming to be "prolife" they can more accurately be described as pro-puritanism. On more than one occasion conservative posters on this board as well as right-wing politicians and media types have suggested that unwanted pregnancies are an appropriate punishment for irresponsible for sexual behavior and have even implied that being forced to a carry a pregnancy to term is the appropriate punishment for said behavior. It shouldn't be all that surprising that DeSantis is opposing additional funding for contraceptives since the religious right believes that easy access to contraception encourages inappropriate sexual behavior. One irony is that while conservatives claim to be fiscally conservative their opposition to subsidized contraceptive has the opposite effect since it is far less costly to subsidize contraception than to provide welfare benefits to low-income women and children.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/poli...na-pushaw-desantis-foreign-agent-saakashvili/

A spokeswoman for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) this week registered as a foreign agent of a former president of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili, belatedly detailing work she performed for the politician between 2018 and 2020.

The spokeswoman, Christina Pushaw, made the disclosure following contact from the Justice Department, according to her attorney, Michael Sherwin. She began her work in 2018 as a volunteer in the post-Soviet country, Sherwin said, and was ultimately paid $25,000 over the course of two years.

“Her efforts included writing op-eds, reaching out to supporters and officials, and advocating on his behalf in Georgia and in the United States,” Sherwin said. “The work ended in 2020. Ms. Pushaw was notified recently by the DOJ that her work on behalf of Mr. Saakashvilli likely required FARA registration. Ms. Pushaw filed for the registration retroactively as soon as she was made aware.”

People often cheer restrictions on the freedom of others; happens all the time on countries headed toward dictatorship. Demagogues rise, supported by those masses, and are cheered for it. Those cheering masses usually don’t realize what happened until it is too late. It isn’t Florida, but did anyone see the recent ruling restricting Bivens cases and empowering law enforcement to violate your rights? What good is a right against unlawful searches of you can’t enforce those rights? 6-3. If that draft abortion opinion is issued close to what it says, say goodbye to your right to privacy, too. Not bad for the first full term with Trump’s three new justices. DeSantis wants SCOTUS to hold the constitution doesn’t regulate defamation; that it is all up to the states. How about strict liability libel laws applied to media? Your rights are being chipped away and you are cheering it.

I just wanted to check into this thread to say that I am almost universally opposed to using childish/overly extreme nicknames to refer to our elected officials/their platforms, but I am strongly considering an exception for “Desantistan”. :emoji_sweat_smile:

Depend on what your definition of "peaceful," as in protests, is. Here's a hint... we've all seen the images on TV of the Lefts' peaceful protests.

You should also look up the legal definition/description of a protest and the laws that govern them are. You can't even legally block roads...

Now the cops have the right and obligation to stop it, and it's not an uncertainty if the law is on their side.

As reported extensively, right-wing brownshirts showed up at peaceful protests and instigated violence to discredit BLM. Unfortunately, it worked.

Trump's Homeland Security chief acknowledged that white supremacist extremists played a role in instigating the violence at the rallies.

    . . . . unless DeSantis wants your votes!

DeSantis has already shown that he will only apply this law to serve his poltical aspirations. Another bullet in his fascist gun.

Well now that depends on the situation. If it is a normal day I will probably wave to them and ask how they are doing, might even carry on a short conversation. If it is at 10PM and there is a 7 O'clock curfew and the smell of burning buildings in the air you are probably right.

That's not true. I say hello to everyone. What you libs need to understand is that we don't care about the color of people's skin. We judge people by their character.
