That one doesn't pass muster. But with a small tweak in Northeast Florida, it likely would. You basically have to maintain Black representation there under the Florida Constitution and the VRA.

Trial court order striking an illegal map reversed because the order enjoining the map does not “preserve the status quo.” The status quo being an illegal map that violates the fair district amendment because it removes representation of minorities. But let’s not teach people about institutional racism. Let’s just preserve the status quo. This is going to be decided in the federal courts.

The First DCA is already proving me right. We'll see if the Florida Supreme Court does. I fully expect it will. The contrast of New York and Florida shows us the difference between ideology (which is applied equally) and partisanship (which isn't).

The Republican judges on the First DCA are partisan hacks. I don't expect the Florida Supreme Court to be any different. They're people who don't care about the oath they swore and don't believe in abiding by the duty their position imposes on them. I hope they make me eat these words, but I'm not holding my breath on that.

This is a textbook VRA issue. The First DCA, by ruling on status quo, ducked the merits. The national interest in having this resolved timely before primaries will put this in the federal courts if the Florida Supreme Court affirms on preserving the status quo. Especially given the evidence that the status quo is illegal.

Republican SCOTUS is not going to let that happen. They'll apply the Purcell Principle. They already did that in Alabama, despite a three-judge panel (majority Republican) holding the map violated the VRA.

With the 2 recent SCOTUS rulings it looks like the Desantis map has the possibility of falling after all
