Vale broken again easily to lose his match and the team match Shelton was about to lose his second set as well Props to UVA, they flat out beat UF tonight. So much experience and talent for UF, but they couldn't put it together. UVA is my bet to win it all now
It was a great match between two teams who were peaking at the right time. Virginia was the better team tonite but our guys fought their tails off. I was extremely upset at the lousy coverage by tennisONE and their provider. Bush league coverage for a national chamionship event.
Man that sucks for the guys. Hate to see it, but that is what they play the games. Tennessee and Kentucky in the final 4 and Florida out.
Surprising this matchup wasn't easier to watch considering Final 4 matchup. I tried and failed. Hope Va wins it all
Virginia went thru the NCAA tourney losing only 1 singles match, and that was against the Gators. Goodger was up 6-5 in the final set at #6 singles when the match was called. Ben, who beat the same opponent 7-5 in the 3rd set back in February, had split sets with their #1. Vale was also playing a rematch against the same player he had lost to in straight sets at the Indoors and played a great 1st set winning 6-2. He was 2 points from winning the 2nd set tiebreaker-and his match-but his opponent hit a great passing shot to pull out the 2nd set, then steamrolled Vale in the 3rd. Riffice, who beat the same player 6-3, 6-2 in February, jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the 1st set before rain suspended play. Both Riffice and Vale's levels of performance dropped off after the rain delay (or their opponents' lifted up). Silmar had chances in both sets to pull ahead, but his nerves rattled him in the big points (double faults, unforced errors) in two very winnable sets. The match was much closer than what the final score indicated. It came very close to being tied at 3-3 with all eyes on court 1 watching the 3rd set between the coach's son vs Virginia's top singles player for the win. And you just know it would have ended up in a winner-take-all walk off tiebreaker! This match should have been the finals because Florida and Virginia are definitely the top 2 teams in the country IMHO.
Shelton and Riffice have bounced back nicely in the individual tournament. Both into the singles SF with wins today. Sam beat the guy from UVA he lost to in the team tournament. They are also playing in the doubles QF now.
I watched the doubles match, looked like Shelton double faulted too much and needs to improve his net game. I hope they regroup for semi-finals singles.
Riffice falls in 3 sets and Shelton with a gutsy performance to come back and take his match to advance to the finals.
Bonus points for beating Tennessee. Sad for Sam but both good matches, 4 very talented players at this stage. Final will be a rematch of the fall All-American final that Ben won against Holmgren from San Diego.
