When I think of Bobby Petrino and Hugh Freeze, I wonder how in the world society has chosen to so value such morally bankrupt men. That kind of "very human fallibilities too" thinking can lead to Sandusky. I kinda put Urban in that group. The ends don't justify the means. This is an academic institution. Job one: mold young men. Unpopular opinion, so I'll take the shots.
“emotional distress”, seriously...c’mon Josh, what a joke! Former Jaguars kicker Josh Lambo sues organization over alleged Urban Meyer incident, per report
I don’t so much mind the separation of athletics and academics but even in team sports, I believe building young men is the most important thing. That’s what team sports are about as kids, learning to work as one and being a part of something.
Lambo's lawsuit claims his performance suffered as a result of being kicked and verbally abused by Meyer last year. It also claims Meyer and the Jaguars created a hostile work environment -- and the incident affected Lambo's ability to sleep, practice, and perform his job the way he was accustomed to in his prior seven seasons. Lambo missed all three of his field goal attempts in four games before he was released in October.
Call me "old school", but being called Dips***, and getting kicked in the behind caused him all of this emotional stress???? He would not have survived one day in my high school. Not one day. I had teachers in grades 9-12, as well as other students, harass better than that. Wish I was the judge in that case, so I could stop the trial and ask that wussy dude some questions regarding his ability to withstand being called a wuss or a pansy or, heaven forbid, a beta male.
Does anyone think he cares about this 10+ years and two jobs after he left here? He had no affiliation before or after he was well paid to coach the football team at UF
Narcissists care about accolades. Especially if they have fallen from grace and need new ways to acquire adulation.
Absolutely He likes UF — we are the high point of his career. That’s the big reason why I was hoping he’d make it in Jax. Could have been a real symbiotic relationship for us. But not to be
Of all the things he's done, this one is the thing that is being blown way out of proportion. Most coaches in America over the last 100 years have probably done meaner things to underperforming players.
He's a public figure in the public eye. Anything he does in public is fair game, fair or not, that's the way it is.
I wasn’t implying that coaches were physically abusive, but practicing with water restriction was common, as well as drills like Oklahoma and bull in the ring, and I never heard a coach in the 80s worry about a concussion.
They are football coaches. And what did Urban do that was so "morally bankrupt"? Got drunk and flirted with a girl at a bar? That's all we know. His wife hasn't left him. Maybe she knows something you internet cowboys don't. And since when did football coaches become patrons of virtue? I don't what world you live in, but I know lots of people that have done worse. Why don't you check out your mold young men religion, and compare it with what college professors do, all the time. With the coeds.
@Claygator I view this as a spectrum. Urban -> Petrino/Freeze -> Sandusky. I'd throw Bobby Knight into the middle. Professors and Hollywood moguls can be on there too. IMO these are all related. "As long as you get results, we don't care about character." That road leads to bad outcomes. Urban's last 3 coaching gigs ended poorly. Look at recent comments by Doug Pederson and Khan. Look at what went down at OSU. This isn't "paragon of virtue". It seems he treated everybody like crap, viewed himself as a Master of the Universe, immune to oversight. Organizations often get rid of people for bad behavior. Actions have consequences. As a former Navy officer, I'm happy for that. I realize a lot of fans primarily want the rings. But if you told me: "We could hire Urban and win 3 of the next 5 NCs", I'd find another team. I realize I might be an outlier.
