There are a lot of mental gymnastics here to avoid addressing the point. Disney spoke as a company. That political speech is protected speech under the First Amendment. DeSantis and his toadies used the government to punish them for their political speech. That is contrary to the First Amendment. It's not rocket science.

    In related news:

“Florida’s censorship agenda continues unabated under Governor Ron DeSantis as he takes further aim at free speech in higher education.

A presentation sent to faculty and staff by University of Florida President Kent Fuchs warned that approximately $100 million in performance funding is at risk for the institution if it does not abide by guidelines outlined by House Bill 7, a law signed by DeSantis known as the ‘Stop Woke Act’.”

    Go Gators!

'Stop WOKE Act' could cost the University of Florida $100M in funding

That law is a particularly pernicious attack on free speech and academic freedom. But unsurprisingly, the totalitarians cheer on Ronnie, as he attacks the rights of the people they consider their political enemies.

DeSantis has always been an unAmerican dictator wannabe, and those who cheer him on really need to take a hard look at their loyalties toward this country. I’m wondering if this is what he really believes, he wants some of that Koch money since they’ve been tying donations to what’s being taught, or both.

Post a case cite to support your view of the First Amendment. @gator_lawyer posted a Supreme Court decision in the other thread that is in point: it holds that government cannot deny benefits or rights in retaliation for speech. So, DeSantis May he beloved for these behaviors, but the Supreme Court long ago said that this was a violation of the First Amendment. Also, another poster posted out that government cannot change the conditions for the repayment of bonds without violating the contracts clause because making it harder for the bonds to be repaid impairs the agreement between the bond holder and the seller. Finally, Disney developed its property in reliance on the property right conveyed by the state of being able to self govern and raise revenue. Those property rights were taken always without compensation. So, post your legal authority for what DeSantis just did they Support’s that he has not violated three different provisions of the Bill of Rights if the United Stares Constitution. You see, you may love DeSantis for what he did because you disagree with Disney’s speech. But, that just makes you another cheerleader for an autocrat a “hater” of. Freedom. Because retaliation for speech by government violates the constitution whether you agree with the speech being punished or not.

Post your authority. Every business in Florida has the right to speak in favor of the governor without consequences?

Be careful not to say something publicly that pisses off someone in power. You never know when they will come for your business or how.

You can speak about anything or anyone but there's always a chance of being disciplined , attacked, may lose business or given a temporary ban for offending .

Not by government. Not in a country that protects speech from government sanction.

It's bad. The law school, which has had a meteoric rise in recent years, has lost and is losing a lot of great professors. They're struggling to replace them. There are professors throughout the university who are irate over the attacks on free speech and academic freedom.

For one year, and that money is coming from the federal government that was to be used to fight Covid in the state. If anyone needs to be thanked for the money it’s President Biden.

DeSantis is like that guy you give money to so he can buy medicine for his sick kid but uses it to gamble instead.

I'll add my 1cent. Let's first remember that rankings are based largely on perceptions. UF had long ago established itself as great public research university. To that end, rankings kind of caught up, but mainly due to the concerted effort to play to those who do the rankings. Within the academy, it's a different story.

All that said, DeSantis is gunning down academic freedom and his sycophantic base is cheering him on, sickenly In doing I'd bet the ranch that it will hurt rankings. I can't see how it wouldn't. We haven't held that high ranking long so it's already tenuous, unlike some others who've been viewed as T5/T10 forevah.

FWIW, imo, the difference between a T5, T10, and T100 research U is not all that large either, and has little to do with how great an education that students can receive. It's about publishing and grant dollars.
