I can personally vouch for the “smoking dope” part and you’d be way wrong lol. One of the starting CBs and I used to get blazed together a lot:) and we each had our own stash. That ‘84 team was the best team in the nation.

This is very true but Spurrier is an incredibly high bar. that guy was lightning in a bottle at the right time and a game that does not exist today. both of us who are lucky enough to experience him as a fan are lucky enough. Rare magic but I doubt occurred many places or will occur again in our lifetime, unfortunately.

And can say probably the best team we ever had.
The line was completely dominant and we would impose our will on great teams.
Can only imagine what Spurrier or Meyer could have done with that offensive line.

Have to say I begrudgingly mention Meyer's name only cause he did win 2 Titles for us, but I must say I think of him as almost a black mark on this program.
He isn't the type of individual I would want representing me or this Gator program that I love.
We paid a high price for his shenanigans here from the players he recruited to the way he completely broke this program.

Getting off my high horse now!

That ‘84 team doesn’t get nearly enough credit by most Gators fans.

I was at the Auburn game at home 1984 nightgame for the sweet revenge against that scumbag Pat Dye. Bo Jackson took himself out of the game our Strong Safety A. White smashed his ass so many times. Destroyed them on both sides of the ball. Our seats in the end zone gave a great view of just how good the OL Great Wall of Florida was. Lomas Brown best OT ever here. Yelled like a drunk (but was not at all, just insanely happy) at liar Coach Dye over & over as he came off the field into the SE corner ...“How about that wishbone Pat? That game plan SUCKED! How about that wishbone?!?” he tried to rush the bleachers and got held back by Asst. Coach. No bs. One of my favorite memories in that stadium.
Then, next week I’d sworn off the worlds largest outdoor cocktail party after being there for the ‘82&83 debacles and didn’t go like a fool had it on the tv. Probably biggest win vs. Georgia in our history 24-3? (At least at that time) Bell to Nattiel for about 96 yards TD after that goal line stand. One of the loudest Ive ever heard that stadium. Think it’s on YouTube somewhere.

Why would that surprise anyone? Meyer was a master recruiter, which is a completely useless skill at the professional level. He was a great motivator, but what it takes to motivate college kids is different than what it takes to motivate pro players. What does he have left? An RPO offense and extra emphasis on special teams? Meyer was less qualified than Spurrier was to coach at the professional level. He should have never left college football.

Meyer didn’t leave college football voluntarily. He was forced out at Ohio State when his sins finally caught up with him.

And you are correct that being a master recruiter is a useless skill at the NFL level. Just ask Nick Saban.

Bingo. That is why to this day I count 9 SECC’s for Florida instead of 8. At the time had that been one of the big three who ran the league - Ga, UT and Ala - that title never would have been vacated. Lying, cheating Dubose Coach of Ala still has his ‘99 ring and the Bammers still count it. Was never vacated. We’re the only school that has ever been vacated for a title because at the time the heavies in the league thought they could keep their foot on our throats.

I’m probably in the minority here but I believe the 84 team should be on the list of titles in the Swamp. Not 85 or 90 but yes 84. They had that stolen.

    and no I’m not bitter…

And that pretty much sums up the issue imo. The Meyer/ROH debate is really no question. Someone posted before that Meyer had no business being bestowed with any accolades that are associated with “honor”, or something to that effect. I couldn’t agree more.

Frankly, it was astonishing to me the number of folks here who vehemently defended Meyer's right to be in the ring. That's a big oops imo.

I’ll admit to being one of those pushing for Urbs to be inducted into the ROH. He left UF on a weird note with all the esophageal spasms stuff and the quitting and un-quitting silliness — however, we really don’t know what his health condition was and we also don’t know if he might have un-quit because Foley begged him to. Nothing he did while at UF struck me as “dishonorable”.

For 2 SEC and national championships and Tim Tebow (who still defended Urbs) I was ready to give him the benefit of the doubt. Whatever he did at pOSU does not matter a bit to me - it’s UF’s Ring of Honor we’re talking about here.

I became more enthusiastic about inducting him after he took the Jags job — the potential for positive UF press and even recruiting advantages was clearly there. But it all changed for me after he blew it so bad in Jax - not joining his team on the ride back to Jax and staying in Ohio to party and further embarrass his team…..and all the negative press that came out afterwards…
That did it for me. The guy has character issues for sure.

Nice post, Skink. I think a buncha people gave Urban a pass for the championships + Tebow and I guess that's understandable. I just never liked the guy. Didn't care that he left or how he did it. He was just too willing to eschew ethics and that's come to be just about everywhere he's been.

Come on. How can he pay the buyout is what this is all about.

Sheesh. Been watching Putin and his foreign minister lately? Lying is the game.

You don't fire a coach in one season. Meyer is going to get a payout.

And for all your wankers that hate that he won us two natties, go have a twinkie.

You got it buddy! And it's the primary reason why I'll never automatically pull for an SEC team just because they're SEC - especially Tennessee, Georgia, LSU, Ole Miss, Kentucky, and (haha) Vandy, who all voted against us back in 84-85. Screw 'em
