Agree about being turned off... I remember a few years thinking how great it is to just thinking of Gator football for decades to come... Now I have been having those thoughts like do of the NFL where college football just becomes a similar setup where those with the NIL money just win every year and there really isn't a reason to play the season anymore. Too be fair, the current playoff system has already pushed it in that direction since the selection committee will simply pick the same 4-5 schools every year even if they barely play any games (OSU!)
Napier starting to sound like he might not add many more incoming transfers after all in his latest booster club speaking engagement. I read that we are still at 88 scholarships with only three UF guys hitting the portal since the spring game. I wonder if less will leave than expected. We'll know soon with May 1st approaching fast.
Looks like WR from PITT, the belitnokoff winnner, going to UsC for rumors of 1 million. Pitt coach furious since Addison wasn’t even in portal yet when Riley or Riley team contacted Addison to tempt him to leave Pitt. Rumors on top of rumors.
Yup. Just like baseball. Have a great year for oh say....the Royals and look to go to New York, Boston LA. Have a great year at Pitt. Louisville. Start looking at Bama, Georgia, Lsu apparently Miami now too.... Even better no contract to tie you down so adios! Great system we have here. Then again..the portal is the biggest culprit. I mean Gibbs did leave Georgia tech for Alabama before all of this. Plug and play...
For Capitalism to work well there needs to be a clear set of rules and regulations to allow competition and fairness. That is the role of governing bodies. In this case, there was an idea that athletes need compensation but few guidelines for schools to create a sensible system. This is the result. Perhaps coaches or schools will demand guidelines, or the big money schools will be happy with their good fortune and sink proper regulations. USA has a long history of both...good and bad. I wouldn't bet on it, but may we have the good fortune of some sanity!
As has been mentioned before the combination of NIL and the transfer portal/no year sit out rule has created the perfect storm. Anyone can leave any year for more money. There are no contracts so it’s worse than pro sports where at least players are bound for a certain period of time. This is not maintainable and the powers that be won’t allow this to continue. The NCAA may be powerless, but the schools and coaches aren’t and they won’t allow this to continue. Not shocking that it is chaotic at inception, but I’m thinking there will be an equilibrium found.
So can you actually make an offer to a kid on another team that isn’t in the portal? I know it happens, but don’t you still have to pretend? I guess if it isn’t the school, then all bets are off? Crazy. No more tampering either I guess.
Technically, no you can’t. But the ncaa is clueless and morons so unless Cleveland state or north west Montana is violating the spirit of nIL, they are looking the other way.
