DeSantis vs. Disney

My complaint throughout this entire thread has been based on that reality, so I'm not sure how you'd be confused about my stance on it. And I "hedged [my] bets" because there are exceptions to the rule. For example, viewpoint discrimination isn't unconstitutional when it's government speech.

 

On a tangentially related note, one of the DeSantis lackeys who sponsored the Disney bill, Randy Fine, was exposed as having threatened to get money allocated for the Special Olympics taken away from his district because he was angry that a local politician he was feuding with got invited (and accepted the invite) to a fundraiser with police officers for charity (that he refused to attend).

He also tried to have the local government attorney who recommended that the county disclose the text messages in response to a public records request fired.

Well, yes. Because the ISSUE is what the court needs to construe to resolve the matter before it. Just because there’s some tortured tangential way to relate something to the constitution like engaging in six degrees from Kevin Bacon, does not mean the Court is addressing a constitutional issue.

 

Why not? They have no such special arrangement in California and Disney Land has done quite nicely through the decades. In fact, in one article I read they compared the two situations. In Florida, the RCID issued bonds (Disney) for road improvements. In California, Disney brow beat the county into raising the money for the road improvements. Sure, it took a little longer, but actually cost Disney much, much less (actually cost them nothing).

Again, Disney did not make a single move without examining the consequences, and they certainly were not outwitted by a bunch of ignorant red-neck hate monger legislators in what has become a total backwater state like Florida.

The bottom line is that DeSantis forced the complicated impactful legislation on an emergency basis. Why? Why couldn’t this have been debated in a normal session, filled with fact-finding and research? The answer is because DeSantis didn’t care about the facts. He wanted to punish, regardless of the consequences.

 

He wanted this passed before the 2022 elections. Next regular session is after the upcoming races. That was more important than studying its economic impact.

Awesome opinion piece on why republicans hate companies like Disney. Not only that but they’re also at war with young people. Don’t know if this is mentioned yet, I just saw that the bill allows Disney to keep a $500 million/yr tax break while sticking the county government with up to $2 billion in Disney’s debt and ongoing maintenance costs of hundreds of millions a year.

Disney might just want to say “Nah, we’re good, not gonna sue”.

 

Perhaps you could explain the sudden anti corporation shift in the Republican Party after fighting for years to give corporations full personhood.

 

That’s because for all their wailing and gnashing of teeth about their Constitutional right being violated, they really don’t believe in the Constitution.

 

DeSantis is punishing Disney for being "woke" by making Orange and Osceola county residents pay $2000 year more in property taxes to maintain Disney's infrastructure and pay off Disney's debt.

"I'm a hard working tax payer who can barely manage get by with Florida's fast rising property taxes, now I'm told Ron DeSantis is bringing California style taxation right here to central Florida, and his plan get even with Disney World is going to cost me $2000 year while Disney World comes out ahead by Billions. Thanks Ron, Orlando was better off without your "help". Then cut to some kids crying while mommy and daddy tell them they can't afford to go Disney World this year.

 

I always thought one of the core beliefs of conservatism was the notion that private corporations could perform governmental functions more efficiently than actual governments. Conservatives should be embracing rather than repealing the Reedy Creek Improvement Act since it delegated to a private corporation specifically Disney the governmental functions that would have otherwise been the responsibility of Orange and Osceola Counties.

 

The mistake is in thinking that there are "core beliefs" any more.
