True but would they blow up their own supplies? Considering how bad their supplies are? But yeah I guess I would put that past them either.

Lack of maintenance? Embezzlement of maintenance funds? Exceptionally high spring melt or something else?

The Ukrainian response to that needs to be whatever the diplomatic version of “We’re open all night” is.

Or as Achilles put the matter of making post-war plans, threats, or bravado:

These would be monumentally stupid false flag operations.

Precisely my thoughts. Historically, when Russia does a false flag, it stokes some outrage but doesn’t actually hurt them very much. They tend to shell a village of no strategic importance. That sort of thing.

And the state sponsored outrage usually follows quickly. Haven't heard from them about any of these incidents.

This interview with Ivan Krastev was mind blowing to me about the reordering of the world that while ongoing at least in part may be triggered by the invasion of Ukraine, especially in combination with the French election. Notes that Russia felt no real need to justify its invasion in terms acceptable to international norms

Two main takeaways. The rapid and unexpected strong European reaction, including German rearmament and Sweden and Finland joining NATO, is part of a realization that Tony Judt post WWII European end of history is no more. No more Eurozone of peace without land wars (with the Balkan exception, which really arose from the disintegration of the Soviet Empire rather than expansion), prosperity and pluralistic peace as the example for what nation states should aspire to. True, Europe’s peace was also a product of US protection, which they grumbled about(no perfect consistency) , but that was Europe saw itself.

Now you have the rough integration of Eastern states likePoland and Hungary, which while wildly divergent in reaction to the Russian invasion, were on similar illiberal paths on one party anti immigration right wing rule. In both cases, the national leadership viewed the West and European ideals of pluralistic democracy as outdated and on the way to irrelevancy. It was only historic Pole hatred of Russian abuses heaped on them that caused the enthusiastic embrace of common European response. But Orban, while no fan of Putin personally, still thinks The Chines/Russian one man rule with internal ethnic domination is the future.

If LePen wins, all these trends will be accelerated and the conception of Europe will be all but gone.

Said it’s not quite Fascism. Said Orban and the Poles and Putin think Israel is the perfect model of the future state. Democratic, but with defined ethnic/tribal dominance, prosperous, but on a constant war footing without pretensions of a peaceful international order that pushes human rights conceptions on other sovereign states, and never imagines its borders can be undefended. Admitted that Israel is a special case with war footing not by choice.

Really has me rethinking that our political moment may not just be an ethnotantrum as I believed, certain to be corrected in time, just a question of when and how much damage along the way. The American experiment, always more pluralistic than its peers (incorporated French and Spanish lands from the outset, Irish and German immigrants became 25% of Union Army, mass Immigration waves and the attraction of the world’s greatest minds of all ethnicities to our ideals made us the global superpower) may no longer be tenable. May have been no more than a moment, an unrealistic betrayal of base human nature. Maybe we are destined to crack, and lose pluralistic rights based government that at least aspires to equal justice under law.

    Has me thinking.
