I just watched the video, and that quote actually leaves out context. The host ended his question by saying people like Disney. She replied something like: Sure, lots of people like taking their kids to Disney.

. The key to free speech then is to be on the right side of issues or government to avoid the “consequences.”
Right wing freedom. From the anti-max anti-vaxed guy. That is authoritarianism to this guy. But the government punishing “speech” that is unpopular leadership is “dealing with the consequences.” Everyone best to know where their freedoms are headed in this country. Read this post. Why is DeSantis so popular? Thanks a look at the bills this session. Illegal voting laws designed to make it harder for minorities to vote based on the giant lie that there is voter fraud motivated by the state’s history of race. Gerrymandering districts to increase white, right wing representation and eliminate African American representation— rejecting fairer legislative maps out of fear of “consequences” from the governor. Laws outlawing teaching about race relations and discrimination and empowering vigilantes to sue if they don’t like what is taught. Classic Stalinism in a former confederate, Jim Crowe segregated state. “Don’t day gay” laws. Sending forces to the Texas border to stop asylum seekers from presenting themselves at the border and lying about their “legal status.” And more. All wildly popular with the white straight dominated base in this state. This answers the question upthread about why DeSantis and Trump are so popular. While the property insurance crises was ignored. Again. Answer my question. How do you know they won’t come for you some day if you say the wrong thing? Ready to pay the consequences?

Bingo. Freedom for too many is freedom to imposed their beliefs on others, including punishing their speech of they don’t like it. This is textbook. And it isn’t just a speech issue; they conferred substantial property rights on Disney to induce their development here that were just stripped without compensation. Codified by statute. The state will have to pay for this now— assuming that they can even do this. This may have been bad policy 50 years ago, but it is what it is.

No. Homestead is something all others have hence the Governor would not do that. But keep creating your made up beliefs that DeSantis is invoking fascism. He is just taking advantage of scoring easy political points. Disney have him a softball and he crushed it.

No joke. Don’t get on their wrong side and watch what you say. There are consequences.

No. Tourism is not the reason. They are popular because they fight the culture war Trump started.

They post funnies because, for now, it won’t happen to them because they are aligned with the leader. That is how authoritarianism operates. They get their power from the population.

It can. Disney jumping into the political world shouldn't be surprised when the there is political blowback. Simple as that.

Because you support it doesn't mean it isn't fascism. Clearly you're too deep in the partisan jungle to see the obvious. Even you admitted he's using his political power to punish Disney for speaking out. Which is literally the defintion of fascism. You just don't want to call it that. You view this as sports where people are scoring points on the other team and nothing else. I'm done here.

Your hypothetical is nothing close to the same thing. Disney misrepresented a bill. A bill that most Floridians support for good reason. In fact the Disney target audience is who the bill was written for. For whatever reason they wanted to inject themselves into the political arena. And in doing so have provided a way for DeSantis and pubs for that matter a winning political issue.

This is just politics playing out.

***if the one student who wore a protect our borders t-shirt did so by misrepresenting the facts then no they should not get extra credit***

There are certain things I am not going to divulge in. Absolutely going to make sure my kids know they have to be very careful about what they say and put on the internet.

Of course. Because you are on the side that doesn’t face “consequences” for what you say. For now. Disney was not worried either. For all the years it brought tourism to the state, paid its huge tax bills., self governed and donated to the GOP. You did mention the state’ Tourism as a feather for DeSantis didn’t you? Some of those benefits even induced them to locate and develop here. But, they stopped towing the line and spoke out. And like Alexi Navalny, they are facing “consequences.” You never know when it might be you. BTW: this will empower like minded local leaders to do the same. Fair warning. Make sure you follow the message.

This is politics and you just don’t like that a big company continues to lose on an issue.

Keep up the fight. It will benefit DeSantis.

Come on. They misrepresented a bill that not only Floridians support but one written for Disney Worlds target audience.

I have no sympathy for them because of this. Deceit should not be rewarded with special privileges. Maybe you disagree and think it should?

Do you think property taxes potentially increasing 25% in one of the largest counties in FL will benefit DeSantis?

Keep hoping this fear mongering will work. There will not be an increase of property taxes of 25%. But know that will not benefit or hurt DeSantis in a meaningful way. He has won this battle and the more it gets discussed the more political points he will score.

You don't know what will happen, and if the culture war starts hitting normal people's pocket book in the form of higher property taxes with no tangible return, it definitely wont be "points" in his favor. It is no longer an abstraction at that point. And of course he delayed it until 2023, so that tells you everything you need to know too, he wont have to face the voters when/if the fallout comes, just leave people holding the bag on his way out of the state.
