Then why not let their parents make that choice?

I didn’t mean just any adult. I meant not a child. It’s a decision an adult individual needs to make for themselves.

If I was a conservative doing this I’d be labeled a RINO. It’s a shame that extremist views dictate the direction of our political parties.

    He said "infant son".

...but even if its a ten year old, should a drugged out dad on a bender be allowed to ink his kids face just to win some cool points? Heck if he inks something racist that the kid has to live with?

And no...tattoo removal isn't an viable option. It's very painful, leaves scarring and is often still visible.

If you haven't read/listened to his yet (we have a other thread on this) I highly encourage you to do so. He talks about this specific thing - how the extreme fringes of both parties force the moderates in their respective parties to toe the line. Very powerful stuff. And I like how he offers up some specific ideas of what we can do to combat it.

No. A drugged-out dad can't legally give consent. I didn't see infant. I thought we were still talking about a 10 year old. An infant can't consent. A 10 year old is old enough and intelligent enough to comprehend what's happening and can consent. If both parents and the child consent, yes, I think the government should stay out of it.

A 10 year old can consent to a racial tattoo on his face?

Thats a weird hill to die on man.

Nothing permanent should be done to a child until they are of legal mature age to chose of they want that permanent change. (Outside of some life saving/necessary medical procedure).

My 11 year old would consent to a Tampa Bay Lightning logo tattooed on his cheek because he would think its cool and have no earthly concept of its lifelong impact.

Your position is so far left and is exactly why even the moderates on your side are running from it.

A 10 year old can consent, but would still need parental/guardianship approval. Maybe there are parents out there who would approve, but most would not.

Still, a tattoo is a poor analogue to puberty blockers. Tattoos are considered permanent, and requires another procedure to remove them. A procedure that can often leave scars. Puberty blockers quit working the moment the person stops taking them, and without the blockers, a person reverts quickly to undergoing puberty, showing signs of a mature adult of the sex they were at birth.

Puberty blockers aren't just prescribed to any kid who claims to be trans either. A 12-year girl who has looked and acted like a girl her entire life, and decides one random day that she is really a boy would not be given blockers right away. There would be therapy sessions to try and figure out if this was something they were thinking about for years? Is this more of a whim? Something else going on?

But a person born female who at age 6 wants to be a boy, and has maintained this male persona for years, has been seeing a therapist for years, and whose parents support their kid as a boy, would potentially be a likely candidate for puberty blockers. The reason is psychologically, developing adult male traits would be disturbing and problematic for this person. It's one of the reasons trans kids have such high suicide rates, especially when they hit puberty. But temporarily block puberty from happening, and this kid can continue to express the gender traits they so desire, and as a result, studies have shown they are better adjusted, and suicide rates go down 40%.

Last, adults do make the decision to put a kid on puberty blockers. Multiple ones, in fact. The kids can't get the treatment unless prescribed by an adult medical doctor, and approved by parents/guardians.

Would your 11 year old have your consent and your wife's consent? If the answer is no, try reading the conversation before lecturing me next time.

And my position is libertarian in nature lol.

I am probably in general agreement with you here, but even then, the qualifier of "necessary" is doing a lot of work. Some people believe, for example, that circumcision should be banned and that it's not medically necessary. Of course, I'm sure some medical arguments can be made on the other side. There are also arguments with respect to treating transgender minors. I am not aware of any arguments that tattoos are medically necessary, and that's an interesting discussion. Would it matter if it were a religious tattoo versus a tattoo of spiderman?

Of course not. The government doesnt need to protect your and my kids from us. It has to protect the immature child from parents who would foolishly allow such a thing though.

I buckle my kids up in the ol' SUV, but we still need laws for the stupid parents who would not otherwise. We dont let 10 years olds ride unbuckled with parental consent.

Tattoos was just an example that came up. It could be many things I assume.

Yet again, you want to use the government to impose your beliefs on other people. There are cultures that believe in tattooing children (for various reasons). When all parties consent (stating again that the child has to be old enough to give intelligent consent), the government should remain out of it.

Do I get to use the government to protect your children from beliefs of yours that I think are harmful?

Of course, none of this is remotely relevant to gender-affirming care, other than your and others' desire to impose your beliefs on parents. The irony in the case of gender-affirming care is that there's no argument y'all aren't harming children with your stance. I've posted the data.
