The ability to throw a football and make decisions on the field doesn't translate to life.

Brett Favre Scandal: Alleged $8 Million Welfare Scam, Explained

Forbes has a better article on it, but it might be paywalled.

Former Green Bay Packers Quarterback and Hall of Famer Brett Favre has been accused of using his "special access" to former Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant and other officials in his home state in order to influence roughly $8 million in welfare payments for himself, pharmaceutical company Prevacus, and a volleyball court for the University of Southern Mississippi, according to an expose published last week Mississippi Today—though Favre has not been charged criminally or accused of a crime.

It looks like Farve might have been a small player in looting the government funds, because the total is estimated at $70 million.

Up to $70 million was misspent in the scheme, according to Mississippi Today. In 2020, officials said the loss “exceeds any embezzlement scheme in the records of the Auditor’s office.”

This almost sounds familiar to me. Is this the second time he’s done something like this?

same story, being rehashed. I believe he paid back, or agreed to pay back, whatever funds he got for doing, or not doing, work.

Is it? Hadn't heard this before. Says it's based on a report published recently by Mississippi Today, but does appear to be a long con that went back at least 6 years with many of the same players.

There's also a burgeoning issue about whether he tried to get the Miss governor several million dollars of founders shares in a life science company with which he had an affiliation.

Brett Favre to pay back over $1 million of government funds for appearances he didn't make

Brett Favre found himself in a weird controversy this week, and there was only one way out of it.

Favre, who was named in a Mississippi state audit for accepting $1.1 million for appearances he didn’t even make, has agreed to repay the money, according to state auditor Shad White. The Hall of Fame quarterback from Mississippi has repaid $500,000 and committed to repaying the rest in installments.
Favre was named in an audit that detailed an alleged multimillion-dollar welfare fraud scheme.
    ........................................
White made a statement, via the Sun Herald, on Wednesday regarding Favre’s repayment, saying:

“Today my office has received $500,000 from Brett Favre in repayment for TANF money he was paid through MCEC and a commitment to repay the remainder in installments over the next few months. The money will be held in our clearing account for a period and then be sent, in full, to the Mississippi Department of Human Services to be used for TANF-appropriate expenditures.

“I want to applaud Mr. Favre for his good faith effort to make this right and make the taxpayers and TANF families whole. To date, we have seen no records indicating Mr. Favre knew that TANF was the program that served as the source of the money he was paid.”

Brett Favre misses deadline to repay outstanding interest to Mississippi - ProFootballTalk

Favre was paid $1.1 million by the state “for appearances, promotions, autographs and speaking engagements.” However, Favre did not speak, and wasn’t even present, at the events in question for which he was paid. Favre has taken issue with that characterization that he was paid for no-show appearances.

Favre initially repaid $500,000 in May 2020 with a commitment to pay the remaining amount in installments in the following months. It took over a year for Favre to get the rest of the initial $1.1 million paid back to the state, which he accomplished last month.

Favre is not facing criminal charges. However, several individuals involved have been charged with embezzlement for funneling millions in federal welfare funds to a for-profit education company.

Favre is a Trumper, I believe. No surprise he would be a scam artist.

Good find, hadn't heard about this before. Not sure what is new these recent reports, except maybe the expanding story that Farve is connected to $8 million in misappropriations in an overall fraud of $70 million.

Was a short thread here back then. I’m sure Trump said something stupid later that day and it got buried.

It basically a who's who of rich people in Mississippi in who was involved in this graft. Anyways, my prediction is Favre is a US Senator in the next decade.

As a country we really need to find a way to get money out of the hands of politicians. Or at least make them more accountable. Graft and corruption have always been associated with the National coffers, but it really seems to be on steroids lately. The rich getting richer, while the rest of us are getting screwed. As Aerosmith put so bluntly: "Eat the Rich"
