As a parting gift to the NCAA mess, I hope they decide to vacate the championship when all this gets vetted. Not that it won't take a banner down at KU, just that this is all one big sham. And I am all for closing the NCAA and letting the colleges build a better police force. But in the end, it is all about the money and if us fans continue to show up and spend money the presidents/ADs are probably going to go with the devil they know.
Text message to my daughter and son-in-law - proud UNC grads: “Your coach got you further with a 6 man rotation than Mike White could have gotten Florida in a lifetime. The accomplishments of that team will go down in the annuls of Chapel Hill basketball. There is no question in my mind that fatigue caught up to your starters, and Davis will make sure that he can go 8 or 9 deep going forward. He has re-established in one year - the winning and dominant tradition of Carolina basketball, and has leap frogged wannabes like Mike White who pilfer Athletic Departments for all they are worth and produces a substandard product year in and year out.”
Feel bad for Bacot. Hope he doesn't put it on himself for going down with that injury and think he cost his team the game.
i respect your opinion. They (the four you mention) were all given opportunity and did not have to compete with a plethora attransfers who were brought on as “ saviors” to salvage the program. Why would someone bring in four players and then bench them for a freshman? He sabotaged his own program by making his bed with transfers at the expense of developing freshmen and a sophomore (Reeves and Lane) both who, at the end of the season, were playing better than Fleming, Jones, Felder, and McKissic (sp). Imagine if he had committed to playing them at the beginning of the season?
Heels came up short but boy what a battle! Officiating not the greatest but not surprising. Also Heels came out in the second half a little nervous after that big lead in the first half. A lot of this is in the player's heads. Even the best coaching staff can't do a lot about that when the game is going on. It's been an entertaining post-season! GO Gators!
I grew up a Duke fan -- renounced by allegiance to duke in 1994, when Grant Hill went off in the final four. I've never rooted, pulled for, cheered for the Heels. That being said -- Davis is an extremely likable coach unlike Roy the cheat Williams. He's a hard guy to root against. As good as Bacot, Love and RJ Davis are -- Manek is the difference maker -- his ability to knock down the open three, and then against duke, he's hitting daggers between peoples eyes as well --- was almost un-guardable at times like Love. Last night, he had a few huge offensive put backs. You knew at sometime Love would cool off, hard to stay that hot for so long. Braun and Martin for Kansas were absolutely awful in the first half -- their 2nd half performance together was one for the ages. Martin's shot in the first half was awkward, strange release and he got lucky and banked in a three. In the 2nd half the kid hit 3 threes, that were money, and had a dribble drive that was legendary. Incredible half from these 2. Davis put them in a position to win for sure, but Kansas had a terrible first half after going up 7-0, they couldn't find the basket Down 3, 20 seconds left, I extend the game and have RJ davis or love take the ball to the bucket and get a 2 to extend the game vs jacking some bad threes. Johnson needed to play more for the heels also, kid's a good player and for the first game it seemed like UNC had bench production. I know Dawson Garcia took a leave of absence from the heels - but how do they not have any players on the bench that can play? Your the heels, who are all these bums on the bench and why are they at your program if they can't play hoops? I get shortening your bench come tourney time, but man why field a team of 14 players, if you are only going to play 6. At some point it's gonna bite ya. I get it your starters play the minutes, but in our 2 tittles, Moss, Richards, hodge played good minutes and then in '07 Speights, Richards and Hodge
I always find it interesting that the officials call the championship game so differently than they would a regular season game. They put an emphasis on hand checks and illegal screens and called them in every game I saw UF play this year but when it comes to the title game it's as if I'm watching a different version of college basketball than I watched all year.
I feel the same way about unc. My daughter goes to NC State, so there's a LOT of hatred there. But it was Roy and a few obnoxious local fans that turned me against unc years ago. The obnoxious fans (one in particular) are no longer in our lives, so that has passed over time. The thing that's difficult for me is exactly how likable Hubert Davis is. Even their team this year was likable. That is annoying. Anyway, I'm glad they beat K. Good that they didn't win a title, but I'm not happy kansas won either. Hopefully (doubtfully) it will be vacated sometime in the future.
By the way, he averaged 15 minutes per game. Nembhard averaged 32.9, Allen 27.2, Johnson 23.8 and Hill 21.9. And despite playing half the time of Nembhard and for all intents and purposes, Allen, he scored 7.84 points a game compared to 11.22 and 9.19. So they got almost twice as many minutes to score almost the same points that he scored as a freshman. He averaged .9 free throws made per game. Johnson, a power forward, averaged 1.3., Nembhard 1.2. Allen 2.8. All of these guys played more than 10 minutes more per game, and started between 10-26 more games than Reeves started as freshmen- OPPORTUNITY. Reeves had the second highest 2pt FG% of the 5, and the third highest 3pt FG%. He averaged more offensive rebounds than all of them with the exception of Johnson (who was a power forward). The point I am trying to make is that if he had been given the opportunity to play, which for some inexplicable reason he wasn't, his numbers would have eclipsed all of those names you mentioned. None of this delves into his ability to defend on the perimeter and to prevent post ups by big guards or small forwards. The other four were either good at one or the other, but not both.
wci347 - I blame KENNY, at half time he was smacking about the Tar Heels can only lose............if. You know he was crapping his britches the first 5 minutes of the 2nd half. Odd game for me, I dislike both programs. Definitely can't stand Big Dollar Bill Self, but oddly was rooting for a Kansas comeback to make it an entertaining game. I wouldn't have given a plug nickle for the Jayhawk's chances the second half the way they were dominated by N Carolina in the first half. That's basketball though, a game of momentum swings and runs. All in all, a fun final although I would have much preferred a number of other teams playing.
also -- kind of sick of hearing the Heels fans, talk about how they over achieved given they were an 8 seed etc..... Nope --- they underachieved all season, and finally started to play good basketball when they beat duke at Cameron --- and lastly, lets not forget they had 3 mcDs all-americans in their starting 5. They try to act like they are St. Peters or George Mason etc -- team was loaded with talent -- 3 mCds all americans and a transfer from Ok that can shoot the lights out!
The sprain actually would have likely been worse if the floor didn't give. Sounds like it's designed that way, but I've never seen a super slo mo of that much give in a basketball court.
