Coaching with Mooney .... They run Princeton stuff at Richmond. Could this hire be a hint towards that style of play?
If you want more than a hint, pull up a San Francisco game on YouTube or ESPN+, and you will see the offense.
I like what I'm hearing about the offense. Something with structure, but still freedom for the guys to operate within the structure.
Bigger pay, base, conference, exposure, and program. Brighter lights. Banners hanging from the rafters.
So how many assistants should UF men's basketball have? It seems like there's usually two or three, but I swear North Carolina had about six coaches on their bench. Is there a limit, or is it only about how many chairs can fit into a tiny space?
Pete Carill was a great offensive coach, but to run his offense requires smart and team first players. I liked it. Late BD ran a very complicated offense that took most players two years to learn. About the same time that it takes to learn how to play a triangle offense. Lots of off the ball reads makes it hard. Princeton offense is simpler, but more complicated than something like dribble drive. Dribble drive is great if John Wall is your PG.
One season, BD installed some Princeton. It was pretty effective, but he knew what his team's skill set was. His go-to offense was a complex system based on high-ball screens. Very shrewd offensive mind. I'm not sure what our W-L record will look like next season, but we're going to see some intriguing and innovative offense.
His high ball screen action was really good, but he also had "wheel" plays that ran both ways on the perimeter that were really good. The later is too slow for the NBA.
"Kevin is extremely sharp and has a great understanding of what we want to do, not only from a basketball standpoint but in the big picture of how we want this program to run," Golden said in a press release announcing the hire. "He has one of the best offensive minds we have in the college game. We’ve obviously had the opportunity to work alongside each other for several years at multiple stops, and I’m really glad we have the chance to add another chapter to our collaboration here at Florida." Wheel plays then? Lots of motion about the three point line with the ball going the other way. Throw a pick in there at the right time and good things can happen. The trick is that it is hard to make that pick legal because the timing has to be spot on.
