Smith is a self righteous prick. Rock should have pressed charges. What he did is completely unacceptable and totally overshadowed his own win for best actor. What a shit head.
Sadly true, and a pet peeve. Then again, I don’t need clicks to make a living, so I should not judge those who do
The point of publicity would be to get people to actually watch the Oscars, not read about it after the fact. Maybe if he slapped him on the red carpet before hand it would have gotten more people to tune in. The vast majority of people learned about this when they woke up this morning. So I don’t see a legit “publicity” angle here. Also there are plenty of stunts you can pull that don’t include violence or profanity that could get people talking. This was clearly real. And I assume Rock leaned into it because never in his wildest dreams was he expecting to get smacked on stage at the Oscar’s. It’s not like Smith was running at him shaking his fists.
Exactly. I think Rock was leaning in simply because he was wanting to hear what Smith was going to say. Words are normally how people communicate.
Yeah, I've heard Chris Rock tell jokes that sting a lot worse than that. Funny thing is Will Smith was laughing at the joke at first, then after glancing over at his wife, he realized that she didn't find it amusing and had to go in macho husband mode so he wouldn't have to sleep on the couch later. My biggest take from all of this is that I know I'm getting old because my young teenaged cousin asked me "What's G.I. Jane?"
To answer your second paragraph, after looking at the recording, it appears Smith was laughing it off, but Jada Pinkett Smith was about to cry from the joke. Smith likely looked at his wife and it led to the reaction we saw. Not assessing whether that is justified, just suggesting what appears to have caused the reaction.
Just a reminder that John Wayne tried to attack a Native American woman that declined Marlon Brando’s Oscar for The Godfather on Brando’s behalf. John Wayne Tried To Assault The Native American Woman That Declined Marlon Brando's Oscar Award In 1973
Probably is. Problem though is that they invited the jokes and memes by the way they've overshared their personal lives, to the point where to me it's stfu and go away. Heck, I don't even follow this stuff but it seems impossible not to notice. I think the Academy has some explaining to do. Could very well have been far worse and that to me is a problem.
Too bad it wasn't The Rock making the joke instead of Chris Rock. Something tells me Will Smith would have kept his butt in his seat.
Chris Rock told a joke about a medical condition his wife has and hurt her feelings. You can see it in her face in some of the video angles. I'm not saying the slap was the right thing to do, but seeing that look on her face I understand.
Truth be told, the joke was kind of dated and corny, the kind of joke I would make when I was in middle school, so I expected more from Chris Rock. That said, it seemed harmless, but knowing the backstory a bit more, I can see why Will Smith was angry. But like someone mentioned earlier, these two idiots have made their marriage and personal issues open for ridicule. Parents, teach your kids its ok to keep their personal lives private. Look at Denzel Washington and Tom Hanks. A list actors and yet you never hear a word about the scintillating details of their personal lives and people still love em.
I think The Shawshank Redemption was the same year as Forrest Gump and it didn't receive much critical acclaim until later.
Obviously inappropriate but I’m not going to judge Smith for sticking up for his wife. Joking about a medical condition of a spouse seems over the top. I also have to give Rock tons of props for shaking it off and later declining to press charges.
