I don't take it personally, I view it as a sign of maturity. But, no hard feelings. I hope we can have healthy discussion for years to come.
All good except your "sign of maturity" line. Maybe not intentional, but seems rather condescending. Either way I'm done, back to watching Gator baseball.
I don't rate anyone anymore, and I have certainly never given you a negative rating. I will reply and tell someone that he or she made a great post or on point or something like that. It's a little more personal, and I believe that it's more appreciated than the like or agree emojis.
It may sound crazy, but I think the top two are Musselman & Pearl. I think both are pretty complete in total package as coaches. JC walked into a great program at KY that was sagging , and polished it back up. I’d trust Muss & Pearl to coach a tight game and get a win more than Calapari. JC just tries to out-talent, out athlete you. His teams can be undone by good guard play. On another note, Mike White’s ranking, he’s more middle of the pack. The sad part is, the only thing standing in his way….is Mike White. He’s stubborn and slow to change or adapt what he’s doing. That’s really within his reach…but so far….he hasn’t shown he’s willing to change. If you look at some of the coaches in the middle and bottom of the list, Florida has lost to them ( or the former coach ) over the last 3-4 seasons. That’s just not good coaching. Especially when a lot of those were winnable games. I stopped counting the amount of post game pressers , after a loss, that the same reasons for the loss were repeated by a player or Coach White.
5 out of 7 isn’t good at Florida without context. We got weak seeds those years. It’s not impressive at all. If it was 5 of 7 with a few top 3 seeds then that would be meaningful. But sneaking in as the 40th best team at UF is more a negative than a positive. He’s not awful. He just has no upside and is a known commodity. The new coaches have upside but could end up being worse. But college sports is about upside…. I’d take that over a weaker known commodity 100 times over 100. Then you have a set of coaches clearly better than White. So it’s down to Kermit and Stackhouse. However you order it doesn’t change the fact I’m not worried about White at UGA, at all.
I agree with AKA that there are multiple components to “coaching” that include recruiting and leadership of the program in addition to development of talent and game day tactics. I’m not a White fan ( I was one for several years, based mainly on the recruiting potential/ face of the program piece) but I’d agree that as an overall rating, 13th is too low - I think he did less with relatively more raw talent than the majority of SEC teams, but the fact is, we slid onto the correct side of the bubble more often than not , and the fact we had more talent was his doing.
Florida All Time Basketball Recruits UF basketball recruit rankings. Some recency bias. You can compare Coach Donovan and White here. KeVaughn Allen and his class were Billy D recruits that White held onto. Class would have been even better if coach White was able to hold onto Noah Dickerson rather than lose commit to Washington. He was all Pac10 first team as a junior. You could argue it was the class that Coach White had the most success with. Coach White had many transfers from his other recruiting classes, even starters like Andrew and Noah. His downfall as a Coach was his inability to identify, attract, develop and retain players from the HS ranks.
Actually, great comparison. But unlike White, Meyer had sustained success. He changed his scheme the 1st couple of years to work around Leak's abilities, with Mattison making the defense far far better than they ever were under Zook. Then Once Tim took over, in went Meyer's spread offense. But, Meyer did well with Zook's players because he's a great coach. That's a quote from the week before we played Ohio St for the NC. But then Meyer went to another level when he recruited Tim, AH, Percy, Easley, Floyd, Elam, to name a few of dozens he recruited. His last season at Florida gave us our only #1 class in program history. Not even Steve recruited that well. How did White fair once Billy's players were gone? Did we even have a single Top 10 class? Did we lose more players to the portal than we recruited? Meyer at least elevated the program until Saban put heat on him. I have no idea if Meyer kept his wits if he and Saban would have traded titles instead of Saban almost filling his fingers with rings. But with White I always knew we would never see another title. I think maybe 1 out of 7 years we would make the Elite 8. If you all like those numbers, then we should have kept White but college basketball is all about recruiting and building a program around those recruits and occasionally doing just enough to win it all. Villanova comes to mind. What a really great program they have up there. I don't include Kansas because I feel they cheat too much. I know they have made the NCAA tourney every year this millenium but I put an asterisk next their name. Of everything I have read, Villanova runs a clean program.
