Personally I say "Good riddance". He instituted the pay the parents and not the player way of recruiting. The "player" didn't get the benefit so the NCAA was OK with it. He was like Wooden but didn't need a Sam Gilbert. He just needed enough well heeled boosters to "hire" moms for as long as they were Blue Devils. Other schools (you know who they are) followed that blue print and now could say it was OK because Duke did it. I am glad to see him gone.
Exactly. The ego of these people. "I'm retiring at the end of the year so give me standing ovations all season long everywhere I play."
Great coach, great leader. However, his "this is not about me" BS is just that...BS. If he didn't want it to be about him, he would not have announced the farewell tour before the season, but would have quietly retired after the season. I wish him no ill, but all the fawning over him is getting old.
The best I can say is, I hope it ends a bunch of this sanctimonious coach/program crap. Unfortunately we still have a "Notre Dame is close to God" vibe in football. Old habits are hard to stop.
Let's just say he won't be missed. My biggest gripe is the favoritism the refs showed the whiny little b!tch. And he was as dirty as Cal or Pearl, so there's that.
K has always seemed like a miserable, self-righteous person to me. He's a great coach and maybe great leader, in some ways, but I resent how much the media continues to insist on portraying him in a positive light despite his faults. Name a coach who's been linked to cheating and K has had a similar issue come up - only never to be held accountable for or maybe never even really investigated. He's the worst loser, for a coach, that I can recall. Blow-by handshakes and him sanctimoniously lecturing the opposing team, after loses, are memories of him that I'll hold on to. On the positive side, for decades he's given really great interviews when on the Dan Patrick show. He's really smart, well read and even funny in a dry sense.
Don’t care for him. And if you’re a team playing duke in the tournament, good luck getting any calls. Your team will need to shoot lights out and Duke stink it up for you to win, cause the refs and the NCAA want to see Duke win it all or least in the final four.
Should've done it years ago, as he's right there with Calipari and Self in the done less with more in the last decade or so.
Sanctimonious ass who cheated as much as anyone. But revered so much by BSPN that nothing has, or ever will stick. Still pissed about how things went down with Sean Miller, DeAndre Ayton, and the ESPN story that Miller paid Ayton to attend Arizona. An anonymous source told College Football reporter that a premiere basketball school had paid a sure-fire #1 draft choice to attend school. With the whole FBI scandal, Schlabach assumed it was Ayton and Arizona, and wrote the story before doing any fact checking. Had he done his job, Schlabach would've realized the payments were made while Ayton was way past committed, and already on campus. But the facts of the story also fit Zion Willamson and Duke. Miller gets fired a few years later, and plenty of fans firmly believe Miller paid Ayton. I still hear complaints now about Arizona being in the Sweet 16 today before being punished for buying players. Coach K and Duke? Can't say enough great things about that slimeball, and gosh forbid if you do.
Dont hate him like most seem too. Living much of my adult life in NC has made me appreciate anyone that lives to beat the Tarheels.
