Will the recruits who committed to Florida when White was the coach follow him to poodle town? I guess we will see in college basketball if it’s more about the program or the coach. In football I think we see the kids following the coach a lot of the time. Haven’t really tracked this trend in hoops.
Yeah I think in the near term this is the most important question. We need to field a team next year that gives us some optimism.
You are making the assumption that Golden wants them. They may be highly rated but not the type of players he wants on the team. Time will tell.
This class is already signed, isn’t it? So if they want to follow mike, they’ll have to enter portal and use their one time free transfer? I would kinda think thats a bad idea, because most of his signees wanted to go somewhere else in a year or two, and next time they’ll have to sit out a year.
It’s likely we will have a lot of scholarships to give from roster turnover, so losing some high end bigs just digs the hole deeper. It seems to be keeping Kawacie, Lane, Jitoboh, and the 2 big recruits are all pretty key. That gives him something to work with. Otherwise the guy is gong to scramble for like 8 quality transfers just to not have to play walkons. If we can keep about 5 or 6 of next nears projected players, then he can selectively add pieces to fit his system and start out with a “normal” roster. If we lose too much, then next year is an insurmountable write-off. So I have a hard time seeing how he could not be interested in those recruits.
Great question, twoda. I hope he can keep at least one or two of them. Reneau 5* stud PF from Montverde Academy - does coach have any Montverde connections? Does Reneau really want to be a Gator? Reed 4* PF from California - lotta questions here. Any chance he stays? Aberdeen 3* guard from Dr. Phillips - should have at least a moderate chance at retaining him Who knows which players will stay or bolt? The next big Q is who will be the starting guards? There are cases to be made for retaining players or recruiting new transfers. Either way, I see it as a likely bridge to where we need to be at guard.
It depends. White might have recruited to be his players or Florida players. UF does have a lot to offer if Florida was the draw. If he was the draw we might have a problem. On the other hand Golden is smart. Let's see if he can coach at the SEC level.
I expect 90 percent roster turnover, even when coaches stay put these days it seems like half the team/recruits move out. Also like to see this guy transfer in Volodymyr Markovetskyy Stats, News, Bio | ESPN
This might be our best cause for enthusiasm. Watched a couple of the videos shared by (I think it was @ApexNC). Just interviews, but it was readily apparent that he's not just sharp, he's smart. Like you say, his success will depend upon his ability to compete at the top.
If we have a regular compliment of 3 point shooters (one great, one OK, one gee if the shot clock is running out. You know. Better than we had this season) he will coach his players when to take a three and under what circumstances to maximize results. Defense if more about hustle and desire, but offence has a very cerebral component if done correctly. BD ran a very sophisticated O. So many reads off of every thing.
What would you think/do if you were one of our signings? Mike White had us in the tournament almost every year. He put 3 guards into the NBA. White with Pinkins as big man coach improved Castleton's game. The two big men were probably coming to get coached by Pinkins. If Pinkins is not retained why would the two 5* 4* big men stay at Florida? In the case of Reed he lost his father. Mike White built that relationship to bring him from California. Good chance They will ask to be released from their letter of intent. Aberdeen 3* is a good prospect but is not explosive off the dribble. All the top prospects have already signed for this year. Our best hope for a winning season next year is if Golden can convince Appleby, Jones, and Duruji to use "Super Senior" year and convince Kowacie and Lane not to transfer along with the other 4 returners. add 2/3 foreign players(Bigs/swing) and keep Aberdeen.
I wouldn't mind if he brought Shabazz and Rishwain with him. Those guys with Appleby, Reeves, and Lane should be a decent backcourt.
Does the ncaa still have the old 8/5 rule (max number of players you can sign from high school over 2 and 1 years) or something like it? I remember under Donovan we seemed on the verge of coming up against this rule al the time. Seems we have barely got near 5 high school recruits in any year recently.
Coach Golden seems to have a penchant for recruiting international players. Not sure San Francisco transfers well to Gainesville, but it wouldn't surprise me if a few players next year come from outside of the USA
