    Please.

At least give me a coach that can win his first game in the Dance.

hiring decisions based on color is racist. You say Grant’s mediocrity was due to the venue, but if his ability can’t overcome the traditions before him, then his level of coaching is mediocre. White was about on par with Sloan and Kruger, which was ok then, but now we expect elevated results and we need the best coach possible, not the best black coach available to elevate diversity. If diversity is the goal, why stop there and target the available black Lbgqxzy, trans “person” available?

If you think hiring a black coach will elevate the talent on the team, how did that work out for Tagert and fsu?

I’m not afraid of the race card and what you’re suggesting is racism at the core.

I kind of remember him playing at Seton Hall in the 90s. Kind of reminded me of Marbury in stature and game, although obviously not at his level.

Holloway will likely find his way back to seton hall.
    Willard maybe to Maryland.

Hayes did a consistently decent job in that elite 8 year filling in for Egbunu, but he had a fairly awful junior year. I think that’s the year a healthy Egbubu would have really made a massive difference (assuming he would have come back without the injury, which I understand is not a given). The 5 position was a true weakness that year, and White’s recruits brought nothing. Not Hayes fault as he was forced to play out of position due to poor recruiting/evaluations.

Hayes had an “ok” senior year, improved from his junior performance. The main issue is he was more of a 4 than a 5. Perhaps more of a 6th man off the bench on an actually good team. But if you put a really good 5 next to him he’d be similar to Will Yeguette as the hustle/gel guy. But a starting 5? That just meant we were overmatched up front.

Coaches that have lost as a 2 seed to a 15 seed include some Hall of Famers like Coach K, Izzo, and Lute Olson, to name a few. All also won a National Championship. Calipari is in good company.

Grant isn’t just some "random black guy", he has a highly supportable resume and ties to the state and to the program. The idea you think he'd just be a diversity hire is itself sort of insulting and racist IMO...

He’s got enough going for him that he'd basically be the “chalk” hire UF could make as far as I’m concerned. Yes, he flamed out at Alabama, yes the SEC is certainly tougher now. I suspect they either try to hit a "home run" or go for a younger coach. Maybe we can pull a shocking hire as some SEC schools have managed to do. But short of that, I wouldn't go too far down the "mid-major" list of hot coaches before giving Grant a call, and I think I'd prefer him over almost any other mid-major coach (even ones that sound good on paper, I'd rather have the guy with FL ties and Donovan ties...)

As the Grant debate rages on, a couple young guys I really like…

Holloway was super impressive. St Peter’s is a very tough place to succeed… very few resources and crummy facilities. It’s a hell of a feat to get to the tourney…, and then the monster upset! Wow! Holloway was tough as nails as a player, and his team reflects the same. It would seem likely he goes back to Seton Hall if Willard get the Maryland job. That would likely be a long term upgrade for the Pirates. Anyway… very light on experience, but a star.

Eric Henderson. Yes, his South Dakota State team lost to Providence but played well. Henderson’s teams have dominated the conference… winning it all three years of his tenure, and undefeated this season.
They are second in the country (Gonzaga) in scoring offense. And the guy almost never loses at home.
    That checks some boxes, imo.

I agree that hiring decisions based on color are racist. A solid majority of the men’s basketball players in the Power 6 conferences are black. Less than 20% of the men’s basketball coaches in the Power 6 conferences are black. That’s racism staring us in the face and something should be done about it.

You hire the best coach you can, the color of the skin has nothing to do with it.

You missed my point. I was responding to WCI's presumption that hiring Grant would be a great "commitment to diversity". I'm saying that making the hire as a "commitment to diversity" is a racist action. I was not tossing it out that he would be a diversity hire, WCI did just that. I'm saying hire the best available.

We could mandate that the NBA be more inclusive and pay more players if a diverse backgroun so that young White, Hispanic, and Asian kids can see someone that looks like them succeed in the sport? That would then trickle down to the college ranks.

Of course that’s not the right answer…

He looks significantly aged and much more light skinned than I remember...I guess thats what 16 years and being sacked 1294 times does to you.

he has moved his family a few times… bama, okc and Dayton….
A move to gville would be a fourth location in 8 years. That’s tough on kids. More than that…, he has a pretty good thing going at has alma mater, and a nice squad returning. Dayton is more of a basketball school than Florida. AG knows the challenges here.
    I think he is happy.
He will not be the hire.
