6' 8" PG like Magic Johnson I would take. He would need to lose about 50 pounds of that 270.

The only mid-major name that's been thrown around that I'd possibly take over Grant is McMahon. I do think people should get over that he "failed" at Alabama; most coaches fail at high-major programs. Fit matters a lot at high-major programs and I can't think of a better personality fit for this program than Grant.

How about Rick Pitino for 4-6 years and Mike Miller as an Associate Head Coach/ Head Coach in Waiting type arrangement.

aka brought this up elsewhere, but it does make you think on McMahon when you look at the recent coaches that have come from Murray State. Mark Gottfriend, Mick Cronin, Billy Kennedy and Steve Prohm. All had success at Murray State and outside Cronin, not a whole lot of success when given the shot at the next job. It's kind of crazy when you start looking at even the older coaches, there's a long line of success at Murray State followed by poor showing at next school.

Years ago Tulsa was the birthplace of successful head coaches (Buzz Peterson, Bill Self, Tubby Smith, Nolan Richardson, etc.)

They seem to have fallen off in recent years.

Why would Drew come to Florida?
Jay Wright ain't coming to Florida...

I mean, people are throwing out crazy names -- but I'm just waiting for Steve Kerr to be announced as the new coach.

Reports say that Drew at least listened to the Dawgs.

I don't think anyone thinks Jay Wright is realistic. To those suggesting to call him, that's not a crazy idea. Why would you not call him?

Drew - because look at what is happening to the Big 12. Tx and OU gone, speculation of Ok St and KU leaving...why would he stay?

Drew could leave Baylor because conference re-alignment could leave Baylor in the dust.

He's more realistic than Jay Wright, who absolutely will not leave Villanova unless Duke or another legit blue blood calls.

    That's a good point.

I'm personally team Grant if Scott Drew isn't an option, and I think I've made that clear. I think he'd be successful here, and I think he could turn around the program immediately if a few of Dayton's young players followed him here.

Define personality fit and why Grant’s personality would fit Florida, but not Alabama?

We have had a number of players/coaches associated with "Shakey" at Miami Senior. I have met AG and UD and I find them to be upstanding citizens. But just being around that guy gives me pause.

You mean a young Billy D who was part of a final four team at Providence as a PG under Pitino. Then was RP's assistant on a UK team that went from probation to a final four. THEN took the HC gig at Marshall who had won < 50 games in their previous four seasons combined and won 18 games in year one?

Billy D had a lot of green flags. Just saying, none of those mid major guys had the pedigree that Billy had so @wci347 wasn't wrong outside of the Baylor name drop.

there have been some mid major names offered that have excellent pedigree, including a couple who were assistants for Scott Drew.

Billy was unproven as a head coach at a power 5 school, and somewhat of a gamble; that was the jest of the post I responded to.

I'm actually a big fan of going the Tang or Michelson route. I didn't think that is what OP was implying. Perhaps I misread.

Pretty much any hire is a gamble, there are very few sure things.

But I think Billy had a much stronger pedigree as a coach and player with experience at mid and high major programs that would give you more confidence than most others.
