Pitino is 70 so he’d coach for another 4-5 years? I’d like a coach who co I’lld be here a long time.

If SS hires Anthony Grant or Jordan Mincy than our program is pathetic. Nothing against those guys as people but omg we can do so much better. Those would be horrific hires. Disgusting. UF needs to aim higher. Scott Drew is target 1. Pay him what he wants and agree to support staff army and what ever else he wants ala football.

You're right in that I don't really follow the assistants of head coaches that routinely lose in the double digits every year.

Still seems like an awful hire.

coach Mincy's been talked about a lot on this board but I wouldn't fault someone for maybe not recognizing the name right away. I think outside of us diehards, most fans don't recognize assistant coaches much unless they're former players coming back to their alma mater or if a program becomes extremely successful and their names are in the news a lot, neither of which have been the case for White's UF teams recently.

If we don’t hit big on this hire it could set this program back a lot. We are nearly 15 years removed from our titles and our fan support has never been lower after these past few years. We need someone who can euthanize this place, as Michael Scott would say.

that’s fine…. But if you are a Gator fan opining about Mincy being an awful hire- you probably should know who he is.

also I haven't read the thread but I've said before that AG wouldn't be a terrible hire but he wouldn't be my first call either (although as murph helpfully pointed out in another thread, we're all just living in fantasy land here about having any actual input on the hire, which I have to admit is 100% true).

however, indulging my inner delusions of grandeur for a moment, if I were Big Strick, some names that I think are worth a shot would be:

    Tier 1 - home runs
Brad Stevens (I mean, you have to at least try, right?)
Andy Enfield ( although I think he just signed an extension)
Scott Drew (hard to see him leaving Baylor but worth a shot)

Tier 2 - I'd be excited but have some reservations
    Kelvin Sampson
    Dana Altman
    Niko Medved

Tier 3 - supportive with cautious optimism
    Anthony Grant
    Mark Pope
    Grant McCasland
    Dennis Gates
    Matt McMahon

Guys I don't really want are Sean Miller (good coach but too much baggage) and Rick Pitino (too old, also lots of baggage). Names like Jordan Mincy or Mike Miller with ties to UF but no real HC experience aren't serious candidates imo.

now I eagerly await the UAA going out and hiring some guy that's completely off my radar to show just exactly how clueless I am about things :D

I would like to see Pitino give us his last 4-5 coaching years. Would raise our profile and set up the future. It’s not just about winning… which I think he’d do here… it’s about legacy. I think people will get behind the redemption arc in his story and just imagine the excitement of Pitino vs Calipari at UF and UK… the SEC’s biggest basketball rivalry.

This will never happen. Florida wouldn’t touch Pitino, but beyond that…. Rick will retire at Iona. His closest friend is a HUGE Iona booster, and brought him to the Gaels. When Iona sold it soul - it was not without long term assurances.

barnes is not terribly popular guy within our program and I would be surprised if we hired anyone from that staff. And Barnes tactics are…. Eh.

yeah, I agree it would set up really well for his redemption to come here and kill it for a few years. And Pitino's a brilliant basketball mind, no doubt.

I just worry that the guy is 70 years old - Iona is one thing, but does he really still have enough juice to come to UF and deal with all the ins and outs and day to day workload involved in running a big, high profile job like this? Plus with all the shady stuff that's happened with him over the last 10-15 years, he really doesn't fit the profile for a UF hire much at all.

but I could very easily be talked into Team Rick, man, so if he does come here, I'll probably change my tune pretty quick :D

Why is everyone so enamored with Andy Enfield? He had a fun team at FGCU years ago, but his reign at USCw has not been spectacular by any stretch. In 8 years (not including this year), he had one good run (last year). I think this year they’re a 7 seed in the tourney.

    honest question: "Barnes' tactics are....eh."
You know this how exactly? You seem to have a take on everything so please elaborate on this.
I ask because I know the guy personally.
