Why? He doesn’t recruit well….he relies on mid major transfers…..and he never seems to have a TRUE pg……his only real success (elite 8) came with Billy’s PG carrying the team (Cheese). And when he does have one (Nembhard)…he leaves to go to a better situation. Also, he never has a pure shooter.
I expect he will do about the same as at UF. That is an improvement for Uga but “well” is a relative term.
I like Mike. He's a great guy! But I'd be okay if Georgia never wins another game, match, or event in any sport.
Tom Crean took Indiana to three sweet sixteens and never even got UGA to the tournament. Maybe MW will be the guy who turns it around, but history (either his or UGA’s) aren’t exactly on his side.
He had some good players waiting on him when he got to UF. His two best teams had major pieces from Billy’s last class. I don’t think he is walking into the same situation at UGA. Maybe he can build something, but that would be about year 3. Just not the same situation as UF
UGa was 1-17 last year (guess the only sec team they beat?). They went to the tourney 3 times in the last 15 years, never getting beyond the 2nd round. MW is a high floor low ceiling guy. I expect uga to cap out with an even w/l record at UGA under MW... at best. Not sure of the definition of doing well, but I doubt any SEC fans are thinking "oh, oh, here comes UGA with Mike White..." He will do well b/c of his stellar recruiting, history of over achieving teams, history of UGA hoops, unstoppable offense, consistency.....?
I mean this is really the truth. He will be good consistently at UGA. Shot at NCAA with a win every year. That's it though.
Analyze anyone of Coach White’s recruiting classes except the first transition class that Billy recruited and show me the players that stayed 3 years. Coach White’s failure was his inability to identify, attract, develop and retain HS talent. Everyone transferred out, even his starters. As a result, he had to rely on the portal to fill his roster.
As long as UGa is fine with a relatively tall midget with integrity then I say good for him! Otherwise...
