Obviously a military target *rolling my eyes*

"Village school outside Mykolaiv demolished in Russian military strike

From CNN's Paul P. Murphy, Natalie Gallon and Mariya Knight

A school in the village of Zelenogai, about 10 miles or 16 kilometers east of Mykolaiv, has been demolished by a Russian military strike, Mykolaiv regional administrator Vitali Kim said.

Video and photos from the scene, which have been geolocated and their authenticity verified, show much of the school has been reduced to rubble. Kim confirmed that a school in the Mykolaiv region was hit and posted the video and photos online.
    ....
Later on Saturday evening, Kim said that the military strike left several people either dead or in critical condition."

and where will these planes fly out of? Russia can bomb anywhere within Ukraine, they just haven’t decided to use their Air Force much yet for whatever reason. They will simply bomb any runway they could use if it comes to it, along with the hangars of aircraft.
So it’s either wasted money and effort, or they launch from a NATO country or carrier and basically escalate to a full war.

Yep, learning to not only fly US made planes, but also learning how to operate the weapons systems. Doesn't mean an effort should not be made, but I suspect it is not the type of thing one learns in a few days.

Curious. And forgive me here because I'm no expert. But I know for movies they've used other planes like the F5 to fill in for MIGs. Do we not have anything even in the boneyard that is close enough to the MIGs they're used to?

Honestly by the time the argument about the planes is done, Putin may have already escalated. Russia is bombing 12 miles or so from Poland right now.

Btw, what about better drones? I know Turkey's drones have worked well but don't we have anything like that? Or is that considered aircraft?

    They're furious, too

Croatia criticizes NATO after crash of Russian-made drone

Croatia is a member of NATO. This isn't close by where there's a chance of saying "oops it went off course".

Time to have NATO respond. Enough. This is why NATO was put in place, to protect its members. I get the lousy bit of "well can't help Ukraine because they're not NATO, so too bad, go die bravely". But this is Putin testing resolve/reaction.

EDIT: It's not been determined that it was sent from Russia. What Croatia was upset about was the lack of notification from NATO that a drone was in their airspace. So I withhold the above until final determination.

Column by Evelyn Farkas, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Russia/Ukraine/Eurasia from 2012 to 2015, in support of providing aircraft to Ukraine.
We can do more to help Ukraine without provoking World War III
Russia is fully aware that lethal weapons furnished by the NATO powers are being used to kill Russian troops and destroy their equipment, quite effectively in some cases. And those weapons travel over borders from NATO countries to Ukraine, just as any new donations of aircraft would. Russian President Vladimir Putin hasn’t responded to those arms deliveries as if the United States were entering the war directly, even though Pentagon officials estimate conservatively that at least 3,000 Russian troops have died already. Moreover, Putin and his advisers have their own reasons not to engage in a war with a militarily superior NATO. That suggests there is an opportunity to do more to help Ukraine — and to more quickly end the war with a stalemate or a Russian retreat.

The Ukrainians need better air defenses — either more surface-to-air equipment, like the British Starstreak missile, or more fighter jets. Delivering such weaponry wouldn’t change the overall balance of military power — and therefore shouldn’t be viewed as escalatory — but it would save lives.

as the article says, there’s a good chance it was Ukrainian but we will see. And it sounds like whomever it belonged to it malfunctioned. It wasn’t some sinister plot to blow up a field and some parked cars.

I don't think Putin wants a war with NATO but he will push the envelope as far as he can. He's clearly a sociopath with absolutely no empathy or compassion and his strategy is obviously to attempt to bomb Ukraine into submission no matter how many civilians he kills. For examples see Grozny and Aleppo.

Haven't the Ukranians been using Turkish drones? And I didn't say there was a specific target, but a "let's see what they do" type of thing.

Considering Russians are in Ukraine it could've been either side if it was a malfunction.

    Not so good news...

"Chernobyl staff stops safety repairs and maintenance because of "physical and psychological fatigue,” IAEA says

From CNN's Samantha Beech in Atlanta

Staff at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant (NPP) are so tired they have stopped carrying out the repair and maintenance of safety-related equipment, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said Sunday.

In a statement, the IAEA said the Ukrainian regulator informed the agency that NPP staff were no longer carrying out repairs and maintenance, “in part due to their physical and psychological fatigue after working non-stop for nearly three weeks.” Earlier Sunday, Ukraine’s National Energy Company (NEC) Ukrenergo said it completed repair work and resumed power supply to the Chernobyl NPP.

The IAEA said the staff of 211 technical personnel and guards have still not been able to rotate from the facility since the day before Russian forces entered the site on 24 February, citing the Ukrainian regulatory authority.

“The regulator has no direct communication with the staff but receives information from off-site NPP management,” the IAEA said."

    from the article:

He said that only an investigation can determine who launched the drone — the Russians or the Ukrainians — after the aircraft is pulled out of a large crater created after impact.

Both Russia and Ukraine have denied they launched the drone.

Military experts say Ukraine is the only known current operator of the Tu-141, which has a wingspan of nearly 4 meters (12 feet) and weighs just over 6 tons.

I was thinking the same thing. They were awfully close to Poland today attacking that base in Western Ukraine.

Now stopping not just protesters in Russia:

"More than 850 detained in anti-war protests across Russia on Sunday

    From CNN staff

More than 850 people were detained in anti-war protests across 37 Russian cities on Sunday, according to OVD-Info, an independent human rights protest-monitoring group.

Russian security forces are no longer detaining just protesters, but are also trying to identify "unreliable" people among passers-by in places where anti-war protests were announced, the group says.

According to the group, the total number of people detained for disagreeing with Russian aggression since its invasion of Ukraine is approaching 15,000."

Yes I read that part. Considering Russia is in Ukraine, though, I wouldn't be shocked to hear they've used what they found in Ukraine for their own uses...like the Ukranians have with Russian tanks, etc. Hopefully there's some kind of onboard chip or something like a black box to help figure it out.

I don’t think I’ll ever grasp how a ruthless dictator can get enough people to actually do the work.

Like arresting “unreliable” people. If that were my own idea, I would give up on it because I know I can’t find thousands and thousands of barbarians. And I also know the masses would rebel immediately.

I also know I couldn’t get 200K people to exterminate kids and grandmas as gruesomely as possible. Bomb hospitals, spray poison on toddlers, etc.

And I would apparently be wrong about all that.

Honestly I really can’t answer that. I’m not an expert either. I only guessed that given prior discussions about sending polish MIGS that Ukraine pilots have flown before.

I think there are just a lot of people who are predisposed to this kind of thing. We're seeing it in our own country now. People who would gladly throw out the fair election results and install Trump as the illegitimate president -- people who would rather live in an autocracy than a democracy.
