People saying White is passive. Meanwhile White nearly blew a gasket on that play and had to be pulled back. I have been midway up at the ODome and heard White yelling at refs. He doesnt stop his feet and spit enough to draw the cameras, but Mike works the refs.
Coach doesn't have controllers in his hand playing a video game. Basketball doesn't work how you are suggesting. A football has a lot more control than a basketball coach does.
But he didn’t sit back with hands on hips and say nothing. There is a middle ground, you know. There have been so many times where the officiating was begging for White to get a T, and he did nothing. This article discusses what we have been talking about regarding White and how he approaches the officials; White talks his stance on working officials - GatorSports.com
He controls whether those players remain on the court or not. He also has TO’s he can call. If a player does the opposite of what the coach tells him, then that says something about the coach and the amount of control he has over the team.
I think the refrain that White does "nothing" wrt officials gets bandied about quite a bit, but is not necessarily accurate. Folks watching on TV do not see what is taking place and then pick up the line from others who claim that CMW did not complain enough to the refs. It's inaccurate.
In the Army we have a saying… “No plan survives first contact with the enemy.” You can plan all you want, but your opponent has a say in how the game goes as well. It doesn’t mean you can’t execute anything. It does mean that you aren’t guaranteed to be able to control events purely based on great leadership or excellent planning. There are other mitigating factors.
— There was an extended break in the action there with the official’s conference, going to the monitor, and 2 foul shots. Since we were driving the lane successfully, not sure why our coach couldn’t call the team over and convey exactly what he wanted. Why do you act like that would be so hard to do? Getting it inside and driving was working. It’s not a crazy conclusion to wish our coach would’ve recognized that and called for a drive or dish inside to CC.
I don’t want to condescend or even assume that you aren’t an athlete, but I have to say that what you are suggesting is so far off from all I have experienced playing organized basketball. Even if a coach directs a team to do something, it doesn’t always happen… and sometimes it happens, but not as it was drawn up. Like in what universe can a coach just draw up a play or a strategy and he is guaranteed that his players can/will execute? You make it sound as if pure will and determination of the coach decides the outcome of a match. Good teams lose, too. I mean it just sounds crazy to me that you are saying, why didn’t he just convey what he wanted and presto the team makes it happen. Lol. What in the wide world of sports are you talking about?
And further to your point, there is another team out there trying to prevent our players from doing what our coach wants our players to do
If I was the coach, I’d just strongly convey to my team that they should hit all their shots and not let the other team score. Guaranteed win! Not sure why every other coach didn’t think about that strategy.
— When did I say it was guaranteed to work? Don’t put words in my mouth. I just correctly pointed out with facts mind you, that getting it inside and driving the lane was working in OT. I also correctly pointed out that we had yet to hit a 3 in OT. Yes, we missed every one. So I wanted to us continue what was working. If it would have failed, so be it. But I guess shooting a long 3 that wasn’t working, was a better option than driving it or getting it to our best offensive player that was working. Makes sense.
We have some that criticize the "hero ball" and then many of those same posters criticize Coach White for not calling what was working. Coach White most likely doesn't call "Hero Ball 1" or "Hero Ball 2." Ever. Especially out of a timeout. There's a middle ground. Coach calls for something and it's not there. It's taken away by the other team (who also got a timeout to strategize). The player with the ball then has a decision to make in the heat of the game. Sometimes that player believes he can make the 3-point shot and takes it. Maybe he otherwise has a green light. If it misses he's playing "hero ball" and some just assume Coach White failed to ask for anything but. However, if it falls . . . "what a clutch shot!"
Well if you acknowledge it’s not guaranteed to work then I don’t get your point. You implied that simply stating your end state to your team should get results. I’m sure Coach White… whatever he told the team to do… it wasn’t to miss a shot. He probably told them to do something else which he wanted to result in a basket.
— Fleming stayed by the 3 point line dribbling, then shot a step back 3 with 11 seconds on the shot clock. Reeves was doing well driving the lane and CC is our big gun inside. Neither of those guys had a look. Maybe Fleming intentionally went against what Mike wanted. Maybe Fleming thought a step back 3 was the right shot. Maybe Mike coaches a perfect game and shame on our guys for not listening. But I would have preferred a drive or CC getting the last shot. That’s what was working.
I think we all would have preferred a Gators shot going in the hoop. But that’s not what you said. You made it seem as though Coach White could just dictate what he wanted and the team could make it happen. You think Mullen have ever called for EJ to take a sack? Obviously, the defense has a say in what the offense does. In fact, I would venture to guess that most shots you see in a game are not directed by the coach. Very rarely on the basketball court did we do exactly what the coach said… either because another opportunity presented itself, or the other team didn’t feel like adhering to our plans and wishes. It’s a game of improvisation. You’re sounding very uninformed right now.
— I never said it was guaranteed to work. I said I would’ve liked to have seen us drive the lane or give it to CC. I never said it was a 100% certainty to work. I did say it was working in OT though. That can’t be disputed. I even backed it up with stats that you ignore. CC had 1 guy on him and never touched the ball. We shot a step back 3 with the game on the line. You’re okay with that. Im not. Mike CAN tell the team what he wants. I believe he’s the coach. Wonder if other coaches get their players to do what they want? Hmm, let’s see… Tshiebwe Shines as Kentucky Tops Florida - University of Kentucky Athletics GAINESVILLE, Fla. - When Florida scored the first five points of the second half, Kentucky coach John Calipari immediately called timeout. He had one message for his seventh-ranked Wildcats: Throw Oscar Tshiebwe the ball. They listened better than even Calipari could have imagined. Tshiebwe finished with 27 points and 15 rebounds - his 13th consecutive double-double and 25th of the season - and Kentucky beat Florida 71-63 on Saturday to secure the No. 3 seed in next week's Southeastern Conference Tournament. ''You be the star the next game,'' Calipari told his guys. — I can’t believe they listened. Wow. A team did what was working. Is that allowed? lol.
