It is only insignificant because you choose to say it is. Approx a million deaths in the US is a lot, but that’s “only” about .3%. While looking at rates such as death rates vs population are a good way to compare relative frequencies, it isn’t necessarily a good way to judge in absolute terms. By that definition, all deaths as a percent to US population is probably a bit over 1%, so may as was well argue all deaths are “insignificant”. Car accident deaths are insignificant. Gun deaths. Cancer deaths. Cardio deaths. Terrorism deaths. War deaths. It would be logical to conclude we can do anything we want because death rates are “insignificant”. Obviously most people don’t think that way.

Let's look at things differently (US Data only):

Daily deaths due to cancer = 1670
American Cancer Society | Cancer Facts & Statistics

Daily deaths due to COVID 3/12 = 1487
    COVID Data Tracker

Latest annual data from the CDC was 2020:
    • Heart disease: 696,962
    • Cancer: 602,350
    • COVID-19: 350,831
    • Accidents (unintentional injuries): 200,955
    • Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 160,264
    • Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 152,657
    • Alzheimer’s disease: 134,242
    • Diabetes: 102,188
    • Influenza and pneumonia: 53,544

How is it that after being plastered all over every left wing media outlet and crammed down our throats 24/7/365 for two solid years, Fauci hasn't been seen or heard from since the invasion of Ukraine started? I get it, it's the big story now, COVID has worn out its welcome and finally, thank God, so has Fauci. But cold turkey? No goodbye, no nothing. Gone faster than a straight white male college professor dropping an N bomb in a sociology class at Cal Berkeley. Nothing people who work for a living want gone ever disappears that fast.

Nice mixture of media hostility, a bit of culture war nonsense, and some working class resentment.

    You seem aggrieved, again.

Fauci quickly became the target for thoughtless rw vitriol. It's been two years of constantly trying to tear the man down. But they haven't been successful because he's right and righteous about science where they have nothing but reactionary-ism, conspiracy, and rage. Bottom line is the rightwing in this country lost their collective minds over covid and made matters much worse for themselves and others.

Once we hit the backside of the omicron surge and confirmed that it’s now basically a cold (for anyone who isn’t an abject moron) I think we began shifting out of covid. The CDC no longer suggests wearing masks indoors. Fauci is an infectious disease expert. Nobody knew who he was for decades when there was no bad news to report. We learned who he was because he had the bad news. Now that we are shifting into more of an endemic status I think it makes complete sense for him to fade away. As far as Fauci goes it’s always been no news is good news.

By the way, a little known fact about Fauci. He personally treated Nina Pham, the Texas nurse who caught ebola. By personally, I mean, he suited up in heavy ppe to treat her, not having one of his underlings do it. This is who these chuckleheads want to burn down to the ground.
