Maybe they went to I would agree with that. Officials tend to let teams play to their standards. Look back at the Arkansas 40 Minutes of hell. They were extremely physical but got away with it because that was their style. I remember watching Michigan State and Wisconsin play in the Final Four in Indy in 2000 thinking how physical of a game that was.
It wasn't the third guy was it? It was the baseline guy. He ran straight to the sideline guy. The 3rd guy joined last. Pretty sure the baseline guy had the foul but never lifted his arm. (Maybe he thought the sideline guy was calling a foul?) Regardless, the closest guy with the clear view should get the benefit from his peers. That call may have literally cost us a tourny bid and been the last little tipping point for Mike White's employment. Some here will celebrate that. I won't. I rarely blame refs, but that was as costly a call as you will see and at as bad a time as you can pick.
The play in question takes place… There was no foul call by the official closest on the sideline Ref at the baseline immediately runs to the sideline ref to say he saw a foul. Refs huddle and talk about how UF denied their applications for undergraduate admissions in 1983 and call an ex post facto foul on Phlan.
My thing is would you see that call being made in that manner against UK or other teams? White doesn’t get after the officials like other coaches do, and our athletic department seems to be ok with some of the poor officiating our teams get stuck with. Nice guys usually finish last over someone who will get in people’s faces and advocate for themselves.
I will sum this play up from an official's perspective so everyone knows how wrong this is....Pat Adams is handing the ball in on the end line and Steve Anderson is the trail that makes the call. Pat is not even supposed to be looking at that play as his primary responsibility is interior play within the free throw line to the end line....so he is already calling out of his area as officials like to say. He doesn't make an immediate foul call either...he waits for Steve to make his call which is the correct one and then blows his whistle to confer with Steve. Joe Lindsay is the center on the complete opposite side and he can add nothing to this as he has no angle at all to know what happened. Pat inserts himself into the situation and decides to make a foul call which is the wrong call. Did the contact put anyone at an advantage and it did not. The pass was so bad that there was no way the play was effected by the slight contact. This is what we call a bail out call or rewarding bad basketball. Pat has always been an emotional official and hunts for calls as we like to say...he almost never admits he is wrong which is another issue. Steve is a younger official and did not stand up for his call and backed down to Pat. Pat never would have done that to Joe Lindsay. Pat is also tight with Tony Greene who has a ton of clout in the SEC..these guys have no one criticizing or holding them to standards so they end up getting reckless at times thinking they can do no wrong. If you only knew the amount of back-stabbing and issues between officials...it's almost as bad as a sorority house.
Refs making a bad call is Mike White’s fault? What’s he supposed to do… threaten to beat them up in the parking lot? It happens to other teams, too.
— Maybe when we get the ball back, call for a play where we drive the lane or get it to CC? I was sure the refs would do a makeup call if there was even a little contact. They may not have, but I would’ve liked to see us force their hand. I didn’t think a long 3 was the answer.
You are all over the place. Is it the 3 point shot that was the problem, or was it White not forcing the refs into making the call he wants? Surely we didn’t draw up a three pointer for Phlan as our primary option. It just happened. You are really going to blame White for not drawing a make up call? Come on man this isn’t good criticism. It’s just grasping at straws. This is what I don’t like… give me something substantial like the other poster said that he needs to finish ranked top 25. He didn’t get a favorable foul call is not a valid criticism.
—- I’m not grasping at straws. It’s not crazy to want to have the ball in our best offensive player’s hands. It’s also not crazy to want to see us drive the lane and force the issue. You admitted it’s not a designed play call. So why not call a designed play when the seasons on the line? Is that to much to ask? By the way, we made no 3 pointers in OT. We scored all our points inside. We even converted 2 3-point play by driving the lane and getting fouled. It was working. But our coach is not to blame for not noticing that, right? Gotcha. Makes sense. Keep defending lol
Seems to be a common refrain with refs making a bad call and Mike White sitting on the bench or standing there hands on hips and saying nothing. Just like refs respond to a home crowd, they respond to coaches as well. They are human and don’t want to be taking flack from a coach for making a mistake. Both White and the UAA don’t seem to make a stink when bad calls are made. Taking the high road is nice, but at some point they need to say enough is enough. Darnell Docket injured Earnest Graham in 2001 and potentially cost us a shot at a NC, and the administration said nothing. Three years later and we get the Swindle in the Swamp, and our “big” response is not allowing ACC refs to officiate in the Swamp for about a decade. Yeah, that’ll teach them.
I don’t know what makes you think we can control officiating, or that we should attempt to control it even if we could. Bad calls are made every day. We’ve benefitted from bad calls, too… it’s just that when you’re on the hood side of a bad call you tend to forget it. Calls against you stick in your memory.
Nothing gives a player the warm and fuzzies like a coach standing there with hands on hips after they got screwed on a foul call. A good coach works the refs and plants a seed. White doesn’t do that very often, if at all. You have confidence that White can improve, and I think he will be the same coach he has been the past 4 years, which is about 5th in the SEC and good for a few head scratching losses a year.
Some coaches raise holy hell with the officials, even to the point that they draw a T. Problem is often that type behavior is rewarded later on in the game. Mike White is not that guy.
I don't recall if there was a video review or not, but if there was it would be for getting the time left correct. The clock would stop when the foul occurred but with no foul the clock would stop when the ball landed out of bounds. Those are not simultaneous.
This will be unpopular… but I saw a replay angle during the game that led me to believe it was definitely a foul. And my glasses are as orange and blue as they come. That said, I do not like how it was handled by the refs, of course. We had plenty of opportunities to win that game
That’s what I questioned. It was a loose ball situation where two players were going after the ball. Players collide and fall in that same situation all the time.
I’m not advocating for tough play, I prefer a cleaner game, but we should have the ability to play that way when needed. We also shouldn’t wilt, when we’re played that way.
