I agree with this. Basketball in Florida isn't where the top athletes concentrate IMO. Football is king. That is why so many Billy D squads weren't loaded with kids from Florida. There were some yes but not a starting 5 of people from Florida like Sloan had in the 80's.

Well he is also a lot older. Howland is almost 65 yrs old.
He had great runs at Pitt and UCLA, but has a losing sec record at Miss St. In his 7 years there he has made 1 NCAA where he got bounced quickly. Plus his teams play boring basketball. Maybe fine for miss st, but not UF.

JU (Artis Gilmore) and FSU (Dave Cowins) went to the Final Four before UF. Miami had Rick Barry.

Florida was not a basketball wasteland.

I am talking about the high school talent in the state. That is the base of recruiting for a school like Florida.

Most of that is in "academies" and there is so much money thrown at that.

My expectation for Florida basketball is this. We should be ranked in the top 25 more times than not at the end of the regular season. How many times have we been ranked at the end of the regular season with White as the coach? I believe it is once, but someone can check me on that. That goes for every program, and that is the absolute floor. If you go 2-3 seasons as coach and are not ranked at the end of the season, you should be worried about your job.

Those three teams combined for 14 tournament berths in 106 team-years prior to 1997. It was pretty much a basketball wasteland.

In the 75 team-years for those three teams post 1997, they have been to 18 tournaments. Their rates of making tournaments have doubled since 1997. And that is with a very powerful UF during much of that time.

The talent based in the state of Florida took a huge step up starting in the mid-90s. Not all of it is at academies.

I never said I wanted him at UF. I was just comparing him to White.

At the end of the day, we have become the 3rd best basketball program in the state under coach White. We can let that continue or not.

Look at the records of White, Hamilton and Larranaga, and educate yourself. Or you can celebrate White going 1-6 vs FSU if you like.

Present not the past is how I look at things. Right now we are better than FSU till they beat us.
Miami we won last 2 78-58 in ,2019 last time we played.
6-4 last 10 times so how are they better??

I like Coach White. I agree he will never embarrass us. I just disagree with the argument that fans shouldn’t criticize him because he knows more about basketball than us. If “coach knows more” is enough to stop all critique, there wouldn’t be message boards.

Don't know about that. Texas Southern was quite embarrassing.

It's wild how this sport has such a debatable definition of success.

    Are they?
    They lost to FSU (TWICE)
and UCF and lost by 31 to the only SEC team they faced (Bama).

They have one marquee win. (Duke).

The ACC basically had one ranked team consistently this season. (Duke)

Miami sits several spots below us in NET and KenPom rankings.

    UM has three Q3/4 losses.
    We have the one.

Not sure what measurable puts UM ahead of UF. UF played a much tougher conference schedule.

    Our SOS was 39th
    Miami was 63rd.

Absolutely nothing says they were better than us.
