Noise from Mike White’s camp

What happened to the #2 seed Ohio State last year against Oral Roberts in the first round? Apparently Oral Roberts was pretty good.

 

Obviously some people look at the names and reputation but don't watch them play.

 

I’m ok with it either way. 19-11 and 9-8. Mediocre. But not remotely fireable. I do like his bigs coming in. Haven’t really analyzed the roster, just know 100% he needs a PG for next year (probably two).

Even though this season has been all over the place, I’m leaning towards sticking with it. I don’t see the point of White leaving either, I doubt be “upgrades” jobs, so it would only be to lock in a longer contract than UF would give, call it it a mutual parting. Of course we do still appear to be on the outside of the tourney bubble per those prognosticators, and that might play a role.

 

I would be more than happy rolling with Appleby next year as the starting PG. He might be the best PG in the conference in 2023. Yes, he turns it over sometimes, but he is clutch, attacks the rim, can shoot the 3, and plays tough defense.

 

Im surprised we are out with an above .500 league record. In most years that would have us on the correct side of the bubble. They said before the Arky game that win would have only moved UF from next 4 out to first 4 out, and at that time I thought that game would have had us pretty solid *if* we win.

Have to assume the UK game would make us a stone cold lock at 20-11 and 10-8. Otherwise we probably have to win 2 in the tourney or we’ll be sweating it. 1 might give us a slim chance. 0-2 and it’s NIT.

 

I was assuming he’s gone since he’s a 5th year senior already. Would next year be his 6th year (5th actually playing)?Might be technically possible due to covid year, not sure.

I’d still say we need a PG with speed/shooting to at least fall back to/split minutes. If Appleby moves on we would basically need a pair of PG’s, as the turnovers and sloppy play were big problems even with Appleby.

Appleby and Jones could both come back next year I believe. I think possibly Duruji as well. Only McKissic who's in his 5th year of college ball is definitely done. This is Appleby's 4th year of college ball and since last year doesn't count, he'll have 1 more year. Same with Jones and Duruji. Not sure about Fleming, but it looks like he's only played 4 years as well. For some reason I thought he was out of eligibility. Very confusing for sure.

 

Good class coming in, but will still be missing pieces (legit 5’s, and an SG) as of now..

 

You’re looking at ORU in the abstract and ignoring the way the game actually unfolded. ORU was gassed. We were running them out of the gym. White then foolishly slowed the pace and let ORU get their legs back under them. I’m on the fence about White. I haven’t advocated for his termination. But to defend his performance in the ORU loss is to defend the indefensible.

 

And yet somehow we snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. It wasn’t the loss necessarily, but how we lost that was the issue. Lose a hard fought back and forth game similar to last night’s game against Vanderbilt, and an argument can be made that it just wasn’t our night.

However, we were up by 11 points with 9:46 left and then gave up momentum by going stall ball. We scored 11 points the remainder of the game and they scored 25 points. The same tactic that had cost us wins earlier came back and bit us in the butt again.

The Texas Southern loss was a very bad loss. And we have few resume building wins to offset it.

 

COVID year, plus he’s not getting drafted.

 

Man I hate this argument. Keeps getting repeated over and over again. Anytime a team loses a lead it’s their fault. The other team is trying to win, too. You don’t “deserve” the win because you had the lead. There’s momentum in games and it swings. I’m sorry, but this is one of the most annoying viewpoints I’ve seen, and it keeps getting repeated.

 

Nice straw man. I didn’t say “anytime,” I said a specific time — the time we lost to ORU when they were breathing hard and White inexplicably decided to slow the pace to a crawl despite the uptempo pace being what built the lead and despite having a deeper bench. You are using platitudes — ORU was good; ORU was trying to win too — to distract from how that particular game actually unfolded. White blew it.

 

I’m going to go out on a limb and say this happens to every team. Tactical errors, poor execution, going cold, fatigue, etc… This narrative you guys created is silly.

 

And so what? We lost. I don’t see the point in obsessing over how we lost that particular game. It happens.

 

Yet it seems to happen more often to the UF teams coached by White. Look no further than the second half of last night’s game. White watched Vanderbilt go on an ~11 point run, and didn’t call a timeout to stop their momentum. To his credit, the next time Vanderbilt went on a mini-run (back to back 3-pointers), he called a timeout and that kept the game in reach.

Good coaches learn from their mistakes, like Spurrier moving Wuerffel into the shotgun against FSU to avoid their pass rush. Maybe White is finally starting to learn from them, but only time will tell.
